There is a musty smile coming from our cassette toilet. It isnt dampness in toilet cubicle. Smell only apparent when toilet lid is up.it was well cleaned before packing caravan away for the winter. Any ideas? And how can I get rid of it!
Did you leave the blade open (the part that seals the toilet from the tank) whilst standing for a long period? The smells could have been trapped and sealed but the advice from Thetford is to leave the blade open and to lubricate it with an appropriate lubricant such as Vaseline when unused for long periods. What I would do is remove the bottom tank and rinse out with 'Zoflora' disinfectant as it contains a refreshing fragrant that will help to combat any remaining smells. That's what we do once a year at the start of the season.

No, we didnt leave it open, but will in future. Thanks. does anyone have any thoughts on using soda crystals to neutralise the smell?

Have you removed the cassette to see if the smell is still there ? Could also be water underneath it coming from a leaky door seal ? Just a thought..
Yep, was removed and well cleaned when we first noticed the smell.
Soda crystals are used mainly for removing grease particles such as greasy frying pans etc. but the application doesn't actually eradicate smells as such. Disinfectant is best but Zoflora contains an fresh smelling aroma as well so it basically provides two applications in one.
You can get a build up of 'limescale' in the cassette and rinsing will not get rid of it. It harbours bacteria which create an odour that is not too pleasant. The best way I have found to clean it from the cassette is to use Thetford Cassette Tank Cleaner which is about £9 a bottle and it should last at least a couple of years. After using it the tank is all bright and like new inside and does not smell. As much as I don't like paying out for Thetford products it does work better than anything else I have tried.
