Hi,
Me and the wife have just decided to try caravaning now the kids are off our hands.
We are looking to buy a 2 birth van for about £500-£750 just so we can try it out and see if we like it.
Do you think we should start off with something better than this as if it is cheap we might not enjoy it as much or do you think this is a good idea.
Our plans are to try a cheap van this year and then possibly upgrade next year if we like it.
We have seen some ads for cheap caravans but do you think we are just buying trouble.
Any advice will help as we know nothing.

its buyer beware as I found out to my cost buying a cheap van riddled with damp. Having said that if you do search through the features and tips section should give a good idea what to look out for, Also there are companys who hire out tourers so you can try before you commit your hard earned cash.
Good luck

I would go for something that costs a bit more. There are lots of dealers who have cheap preloved/trade-ins that they want to get rid of. We started by buying a van that cost £1200 from a dealer, it was all safety checked and we got a demonstration on how everything worked, we also got 3 months guarantee with it. 10 months later sold it private for £1000, went back to same dealer and got a good deal on a newer van. Buying really cheap could be asking for trouble and put you off ever owning a caravan again. Good Luck.

Is there a place that a caravan can be hired before buying it as you may not like it at all. Then you would not of wasted your money. Like the places that you can hire camping stuff out, just cannot remember the darn name I saw on the side of it.

If you like it as I am sure you will, you may also realise what kind or size you want.

We have a Lunar 2 berth, and have just bought a ful awning for a bit more room. But maybe had we been able to afford a 3-4 berth at the time, we would not of bothered about the awning at all. But Bob says nno to a bigger cvan  now we have this just a bigger awning as it is the cheapest way of doing it and gives me more room for my wheelchair to turn around in.

We are also big people and you have to conside  your size when getting a 2 berth or what kind it is. We have actuallt been without any awning and just use the cvan, as we are used to small spaces anyway it never bothered us, but worth thinking about if you want space. Bigger cvan or awning.

You will still like the freedom of it all.

If there isnt anywhere youcould hire a caravan, you could always consider hiring a motor home for a few days/week and see how you feel about it. Have you ever done any camping before?

Thanks for your replies.

We are thinking of a 2 birth for 2 reasons 1) the kids (teenagers now) hate the idea of us having a caravan let alone going in it themselves 2) we have limited space on our drive to accommodate anything bigger.

We are looking into try before you buy hire but we can possibly buy a cheap van for the same price and use it more than once.

We have never used a tourer before but we have had the luxury of a large static caravan before.

We now just fancy the freedom, Kid free, lol.

Many sites have old tourers on site that they rent out. Try one of these for a true taste of life in a touring van before you commit to one of your own. if you don't like it then not a lot lost.

If you hire you will get a good expensive modern van probably which may give a false impression of what you could then afford to buy.

Thanks for the advice.

Do you know of any sites that have older vans to try?

We have had a VW camper for a couple of decades and loved it. Just could not afford to replace it now retired. They are not cheap, but if your mechanical minded they can be picked up cheaper, as my Bob is not it was everything had to be paid to someone else so gets a bit expensive. But we certainly had the freedom of roaming with it.

I know the Camping and Caravan club site at hereford has a tourer on site that can be hired there on sight NOT to tour with, so defeats the object as you will get the feeling of real freedom to go where you want to go.These you need sites for but there are plenty big or smaller ones depending on your wants & needs.

I will have to Google and see what i can find out.

Thanks for the links Chrissie.

The first one is ideal. I shall show the boss and see what she thinks.
