is the drain valve the plastic thing thats spring loaded?

depending on which heater you have installed, or how old your van is , yes, if the spring loaded  "thing "is near the water heater ,and hot water is being dumped out underneath the van , then yes the valve needs closing , by laying the leaver flat to the pipe.
