The WSL Caravan Wheel Safety Bolt is the first bespoke wheel bolt designed for the caravan industry. It represents a huge leap forward in the technical development of a component that has remained largely unchanged for decades.

Bailey is the first mainstream European manufacturer to specify this new bolt and currently fits it as standard on all new Unicorn and Pegasus GT65 models. Safety bolt sets are also available as a cost option upgrade for all other Bailey ranges (built from 2000 onwards) and can be purchased through the Bailey Parts web site

Caravans today are much more sophisticated than those produced a decade ago. Typically they have increased in size and weight plus they feature more complex braking systems, larger wheel diameters, low profile tyres and in some cases are fitted with stability control.  Yet in that time the basic bolt holding the wheel assembly together has not changed - something which specialist wheel supplier WSL has sought to address.

Working in collaboration with world renowned bolt technology specialists, Bolt Science, WSL has developed a new bolt better suited for this application in modern caravans. The new designs have been tested extensively both at Bolt Science and the AL-KO research facilities in Germany plus twice on the track at the Millbrook Proving Ground as part of Bailey of Bristol's accelerated life test programme before being brought to market.

The result is a dedicated Caravan Wheel Safety Bolt which features a bespoke floating collar and a high performance anti-friction surface finish, which together allow more of the torque energy to be converted into clamping force rather than being lost to overcome friction, thus significantly reducing the risk of a loss in bolt torque and potential wheel detachment. The bolts also enjoy the added benefits of a security locking head to offer greater protection against theft and an anti-corrosion coating for enhanced longevity.

Commenting on this initiative Bailey Managing Director Nick Howard said: "Fortunately wheel detachments are relatively rare in our industry; however we want to make sure that we do everything we can to safeguard against it occurring on our vehicles. Consequently we wanted to be the first manufacturer to fit the WSL Caravan Wheel Safety Bolt as standard specification on our caravan ranges to highlight how seriously we take this subject".

"We would like to commend Steve Budding and the team at Wheel Solutions for taking the lead on this issue and for choosing us as their development partner for this key safety component" he added.

The fitment of the WSL Caravan Wheel Safety Bolt in conjunction with the AL-KO AKS stabiliser, AL-KO ATC Trailer Control System, TUV certified and laser balanced alloy wheels and high performance Michelin tyres on the Unicorn and Pegasus GT65 model ranges provides owners with one of the best caravan safety packages available today to provide them with total peace of mind when travelling the open road.

No doubt this will get knocked by the anti change brigade. There is a lot of resistance in the caravan world to anything new.

I have ordered them for my 2010 Pegasus 524. There is no such thing as too many aids to safety.

Nice to hear that they are paying more attention to balancing the wheels too.

So they have just managed to invent a wheel bolt that don't come loose? How will they follow that I wonder, a caravan that don't leak?

If only Alko put a boss on the centre of the hub for the wheel to locate on as car hubs do ,would we be needing these bolts.

Bossing wheels is not there to retain them only to take the wheel weight whilst doing the bolts up. The clearance "fit" needed for you to be able to fit and remove the wheel is far too much for that "fit" to carry any of the rolling load. Many vehicles don't have spigots and don't come loose.
The failing in the original bolts if indeed there is any failing is they are not long enough in the stretched part to "store" enough energy to accommodate any settling of the surfaces. [From grease, oil, paint, corrosion, dirt etc.] The revised bolts by having the collar significantly increase the length stretched and being high spec steel the greater torue up both increase the required stored energy.
As originally designed they are adequate it is just they have not enough reserves to cater for situations were the initial contact was not as "clean" or sound as it might be.
In every case they should be retorqued after rolling under load for a few miles as the designers state.

High Birdman, I suggested that a year or so ago and was promptly shot down by a couple of so called experienced caravan experts. I have only worked in motor workshops for 51 years and been towing caravans for 40 years. I agree with you 100%regarding boss/spigot

However with respect I actually designed and were held finally responsible for many such bolted joints on some of the UKs leading capital military projects.

I feel I am here well qualified to comment where others are misinformed, hardly I suggest warranting your offensive label of "of so called experienced caravan expert". Of course you are free to hold and express whatever view you have, but I request you respect others who arguably could have a better understanding.

I see we have the same years experience of caravans and i also was an engineer. My son is also a garage service manager and has also said that is the solution as he does not see motor wheels falling off.
