I have read a lot about caravan insurance and still do not know which would be the best for us as we are considering going to Europe later this year and would like to take out breakdown insurance for the van only if possible, as we have cover for our car. Any views or ideas would be greatfully accepted
A note of caution on the insurance front. We actually needed it last year on a trip to France because the 13 way lead which connects the caravan to the car had become unravelled while we were driving and had been trailing along the ground thus wearing most of the outer insulation off one side of it and wearing through 2 of the conductors. Only found out when we unhitched because the connecters disturbed were reversing light and trailer control.
I discovered this when we got to site. Our caravan insurance with a reputable company includes European breakdown and repair for the caravan so we rang them. We were told 'get it repaired and we will send out a claim form so you can reclaim the money'. Bearing in mind we were in France and in an unfamiliar area with less than fluent French this was going to be a challenge.
I rang my car insurer and explained the situation. They took details and within a couple of hours a French vehicle repair chap turned up at site and carried out temporary repairs.
When we got home awaiting us from the Car insurers was a customer satisfaction survey. The promised claim form from the Caravan insurer was nowhere to be found.
When the insurance on the 'van is due for renewal it certainly won't be with the same provider. What is worse is that the insurance was that offered by one of the clubs so it wasn't cheap as chips off joe blogs down the road stuff.
Unfortunately you only ever find out how good the cover you have is when you really need it.
I knew the name 'nosmo king' rang a bell - it was a bay gelding by Nordico out of Selenis trained by Mrs M Kendall in the late nineties - I may have even backed it once or twice !
