We've only been out in our 'van since early last year and so far if we are traveling I always pack away nearly every thing from the overhead lockers into a box on the floor, all the clothes get packed into holdallsnand placed either on the floor of the van or in car. Does everyone do this? Or is not ok to leave say the food on the overhead lockers and in the big cupboard (I guess it's meant for clothes but we are a big family so we store lots of food bits on there).
Heavy items should not be placed in overhead lockers when towing - they should be placed low down and very heavy items should be placed as close to the axel as possible.
I tend to put everything in boxes or bags on the floor or in the car and put them into their correct place on arrival. I then pack things back up again for the journey home.
I leave things like the plates and cooking pans in the drawer unit I have in my van as this is low down.
We leave plates and clothes in the lockers, we carry water, wine and heavy stuff in the car the kids also pack books and toys in the lockers, I think you you just do these things out of habit rather than rationality.

We leave cups and plates in the cupboard but cover them with a heavy towel so they cannot fall out if a door opens.all our cloths are packed into those blue and white £1 large bags.one her one for me and one for the grandchildren, who mainly bring there own.never but never do we leave any bottles or tins of any kind in the cupboards as the damage caused if they fall out is not worth thinking about.large awning always goes over the axle and after pushing in water barrel and waste containers both of which have there own bags at each end. After pushing in one bike All the cloths bags are packed onto the top and down the sides to stop bike doing any damage.for some reason they never move.the only thing we put in the overheads food wise is very light stuff, tea bags, cornflakes ect.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
Everything in our van has its' place and it stays there whether we are travelling or on site.
The plates, cups etc are stored high up but a couple of tea towels are packed around them.
Outside table and chairs are on the floor at the front of the van and awning, aquarol and waste hog all ride in the car.
last year we packed nearly all cupboard stuff in boxes and put them over the axle, problem was with two small children when we arrived on site it was a pain unpacking everything and putting it away. this year I'm leaving all the stuff where it lives so the van is usable right away. i have fitted a motor mover this year so there is an extra 35kgs on the axle for more stability.
That's the problems I have with so many boxes in the van along the walkway as well as the buggy and the duvets, when we arrive there is nowhere for anyone to go till I've put most of the stuff away.
We have out awning under the front seat on the left side. I've often wondered if we should move it more centrally but because we have the box of tins, the buggy and other various boxes over the axle and towards the front I don't think I could face climbing over the awning as well whilst setting up.
We all leave everything in its place. Clothes in wardrobes food in cupboards, but heavy food items are in a low cupboard. Additional things such as Cadac over the axle, bedding on bunks and under front seat, aqua roll at front of van, waste aster at rear, patio set will go at front of van and awning will be in car if it all fits, but over axle if necessary.generally all we need to get out of the way on arrival is the aqua roll and waster master, and when the summer finally arrives and we take the patio set we'll pop that outside too.
See I read you should empty all the fluids out of the loo when in transit so we do that every time and never use the loo till we are set up and the fluids have been put in.
We leave everything in its place. Clothes in the wardrobe as its over the axle food in cupboards, but heavy food items are in a low cupboard over the the other axle aqua roll and the waste hog in the toilet.
We also leave everything in it's place but we have a special designed rack for cups. plates and dishes in one of the overhead cupboards so they don't move in transit. The advice here is basically to avoid leaving paper or cardboard boxes in low level cupboards as this can be an attraction for mice and any food stuffs as well such as doggy chew sticks as mice also feed on them (which we found out a few years back). The only clothes we leave in the wardrobe are waterproofs and a couple of coats as we carry most our clothes in a holdall and put that either over the axle or in the car roofbox (if it's fitted) then put them in the wardrobe on arrival. The two water barrels are both in separate bags as well as the wastemaster which are compacted together in the shower compartment so they don't move and of course then removed when setting up on site which is useful for utilising space in the caravan if you stop off in a lay-by or motorway services and happen to fancy a cuppa or a sandwich in comfort.
just make sure all catches are on and no loose things to fly around . then go for it .up hill over rivers . through the desert . life would be a bind if having to pack things away every day . travel 3 months of the year in africa . life would be all packing no travel .
