Just got back from a little break where we noticed a van (Bailey Willow Retreat) a few pitches away accompanied by a Jaguar XJ it didn't have a tow bar on it which got us debating whether or not doing so would devalue the car or even in fact whether Jaguar motor company would allow one to be fitted, any thoughts?

Yes, a detachable one with folding plug that completely conceals it when not in use, they do these for Beemers & Discos as well. Cost a large amount though.

Why would Jaguar not allow the fitment of a tow bar? Caravans aren't the only thing people tow; what about gliders or boats or race cars?

I used to know someone who had a new Bentley every 2 years and they always came with tow bars. He had to tow his Morgan Hillclimb car with something!

Bailey Retreat not legal to be towed behind a car in UK, not sure about Europe, but don't think so either.
Hopefully the van was brought by larger truck & the car came separately.

Yes, it's only 30cm too long to tow though! wounded home many police know that part of the law?

Max length

Although with a big tow car and a B+E you could legally tow it.

I think in your 30 cm oversize you are confusing the Retreat's internal body length, with the legal requirement of external body length?

The external body length must be 7 or less metres; with an internal of 7.29m it will be way over that.

The retreats were not designed by bailey as a touring caravan, but for seasonal pitches that can be moved from site to site by a "suitable" tow vehicle

Hi Brin, the willow was probebly on a seasonal pitch, had a close look at one of these last summer and would love one on my seasonal pitch. I think somwere in Baileys info it says desighned for seasonal sites???
The impression i got was wow but also a big no no to towing
not even with a L Rover.
Just on my way out to buy a lottery ticket, need the money to buy the caravan and a small lorry.

Where do they measure the internal length to/from?

As long as the tow vehicle has a GVW over 3500kg you would be fine anyway, and total length is under 18m.

My mate tows with an XF, lovely car BUT, the towing module isn't powerful enough to work his brake lights, he had to convert his caravan tail lights to LED's,unless they've beefed it up since.
