So we bought our old crappy last year. This year I have decided to insure it because even if it is an old crappy shes important to us and I'd like to think we could get her properly repaired if there was an accident.

So as I was sorting the insurance it wanted the CRiS number. I found that easy enough. My question is am I supposed to register an elderly van like mine or is it mainly to stop people stealing and selling sexy new 'vans and old ladies like mine need not concern themselves with this?

I never got any CRiS documents when I bought the 'van so is it all academic anyway? No documents no ability to register?

Don't even think about contacting Cris. If it comes up as stolen several owners ago the insurance co. that paid out on the original loss will come after you for a cash settlement or they will take caravan.

As for accident repairs, an insurance co. will not spend more on repairs to a caravan than they think it is worth. With labour costs as they are today, even minor accident damage would lead them to write off caravan with a settlement of what they think its worth, ie just a few £100s.

Didn't even think about that Tentz!

Regarding insurance, I've checked online valuations and our 'van would be worth about £800- £1100 so I figure that's better than nothing at all to put towards a new van if ours was a write off? I wonder if insurance companies will let you pay the difference between what they think the van is worth and what the actual repair work is if you wanted to get the van fixed?

If its written off they pay you out & you can offer to buy it from them for a smallish sum then organise your own repairs. Thats how its done.
