Be inclined to drop the rear ones at least, front is hitched to car so is supported ok. Van would be a bit wobbly without and wouldn't really do it a lot of good if all the family are clambering in and out. The question is by no means silly, it is sensible and very relevant..Mick
If the whole family are going in the van then I would put them down. It only takes a minute or two to put the steadies down and it may save damaging the van.

I sit in the car at services. Not staying long enough to want to put down the back steadies - but if you do, don't forget to wind them back up before you set off again!
And just for peace of mind if leaving van whilst using facilities put a lock on it. Nearly had mine stolen at Reading services and two years later saw one being stolen. Took all of two minutes. I took photos and phoned the police as it was going down, but they were more interested in taking my name and address. Police car turned up 20 minutes later. They did eventually break the ring up and came knocking at my door 18 months after the event for a statement. At my age I've got a problem remembering last week never mind 18 months ago. If we leave the van now the hitch lock and wheel lock go on.

We also eat our lunch in the car, I usually nip off to the shop to get the coffee's, then take turns to nip to the loo. We would never leave our van unattended at the services.
Regarding eating in the van, we have only done this once in France on holiday when we had some of the family with us. Although a pain. I did disconnect the caravan from the car and put the legs down only because I have air suspension on the car. To the posters above beware if any of you have 4WD with air, I often notice when turning the engine off and hitched to the van or carrying passengers that after a few minutes the car releases air and the suspension settles.
This is why we don't sit in the van for our lunch unless disconnecting the van, I imagine if we put the legs down on the van and the car lowered itself it could cause damage to the van's legs or hitch, so we don't risk it.
Just a quickie, in our insurance it says we are not insured if the van is left unattended anywhere with the hitchlock and wheel lock not on. I took this as meaning in services etc. Might be worth looking in your documents too. Good points about going to the loo in turn to not leave van.
Thanks everyone - I do agree as above we still have the campervan and used to tow a trailer and always take it in turns at services to nip in the loo. Think we'll probably stay in the car too.
