ive got an old van 1996 lunar Jupiter planet that's been in the family for 15 yrs its not turned a wheel for 3 yrs and im thinking of spending some money on it and dragging it round france this august. the crystal water heater is broke after being left full and freezing but to be honest we don't need it and the front paint has faded Im thinking of getting a caravan engineer to come and look at it to check it out do you think IM mad. I toured for the last 2 yrs in an outwell Montana 6 which was awesome. any advice would be appreciated
I don't think you are mad I'd just make sure that the van is safe on the road ie tyres fine brakes work etc all signal lights work if using gas get the gas checked and may be the electrics
Yes just get the caravan serviced & if you have no idea of age of tyres get them changed as a matter of course, even if they have plenty of tread left. If they are many yrs old they could be perished & fail at motorway speeds. If you don't want to tow caravan as it stands then get a mobile fitter to come & service it & you can get a mobile tyre service like e-tyres to change tyres. After that you will be ok to tow to France.
Your comprehensive car insurance covers you for third risks on caravan while towing so if you are not worried about accident/fire/theft cover for caravan then there is no legal requirement to insure it. Its a good idea to inform your insurance company if you have just had a towbar fitted to your car as some might regard it as a 'modification' but should not charge you any extra premium.
