I regularly travel up and down the M4/M5/M6/M1 etc. I often see problems on caravans being towed eg flapping roof skylights/windows loose and jockey wheels bouncing! I feel as a responsible tower myself I would want someone to bring to my attention if anything is amiss.However people who are concentrating on driving (rightly so)are very difficult to attract and not wanting to be dangerous or panic the driver, I was wondering if we could introduce a signal we could indicate safely so that the towing vehicle would be aware that they need to stop at the next available area and inspect their outfit.
Last year on the M5 i tried to attract the attention of a driver with his large front sunroof open and bouncing up and down. i was traveling as a passenger without the caravan at the time, pointing at his sunroof.
he got really angry with me, i think he thought i was giving him the finger?? or doing a Clarkson on him
What else could you do???
I would pay attention if someone pointed at me whilst towing and stop at the next opportunity. And thank them with a wave as well.
I don't know what the answer is as to how you tell ppl something is wrong though. I've tried twice to tell caravan towers that their skylights are open and not managed to get my point across. I was rewarded once with a middle finger salute and caught myself thinking, I hope it rains on that one.
I have had the same response too! I passed a newish twin axle on the M5 going north with his Heki roof light lifting so bad it was almost bent double..I desperately tried to attract the attention of the driver by flashing my lights behind him to no avail.
So I left him to his fate and pulled of at Sedgemoor services,I left 20 or so mins later and several miles further on, the overhead gantries were flashing "debris in road". Guess what...parked up on the hard was the new twin axle with POLICE parked behind frantically waving down traffic to allow collection in the road of their royal highness's roof light...say no more...
Find it strange that this happens ? Surely you treat your caravan like an airline pilot walk round at least twice and check all is safe and fit to drive off :)

I don't know, I did it once, left a window unlocked, got one m5 and luckily I seen it in my mirrow and stopped straight away. And yes I did do my checks but I just missed that one.???
