Hi all,

I had the misfortune of hitting a parked car with my caravan on Monday. As I pulled on to the caravan site on a single track road a car was parked opposite the entrance and as the back swung round it hit the car.  There was no damage to my car but the caravan was slightly damaged. Do I have to claim on my car insurance for her damage or will the caravan insurance cover it? has anyone had experience of claiming before with a caravan intow.

 Cheers17

Phone them, once you have told them it counts as a claim mind you even if you decide not to claim.
How much damage is there , do you want to claim ??

Usually such damage to the 3rd party car will come from your car insurance....as your caravan insurance will not cover whilst it is atatched to the car.

then the damage to your caravan will have to be a claim on your caravan insurance.

Both of course are likely to impact on your next premium and/or NCD for each.

as lunarvenas says they will count as soon as you tell them

i would look to see what your excess's are and what the damage cost as it might be cheaper and easier to do it without insurance.

Thanks, pretty much what I thought. There is slight damage to the side panel and the awning rail,  I can live with it for now but would need to get it fixed before I sold the van. She wants to go through the insurance so will have to contact my car insurance.

Thanks again

So just your car insurance then, no need to contact the caravan insurance, I would think the awning rail would be a cheap fix.

Greetings,

I "rearranged" the look of my caravan three years ago when it tried to take out a petrol pump!!!

I can confirm that your car insurance covers the damage to the other party BUT, in the case of my accident, as I had my No Claims Bonus protected, it didn't make any difference to the cost of my Insurance for the following years.
Don't know if I was lucky or what, but I'm not complaining.

I had a claim a few years ago . I kept my protected NCB but they put the basic cost up by lots.

i hope you took pics of where the car was parked and all relevant measurements of road etc.

if the car was parked in a obstructive area, the the insurance may tell them to take a running jump as it should not have been parked there anyway. !!!

 just a thought .

My m8 took out a parked car with his cherry picker. The car was parked illegally and he thought he was OK.
The insurance or the law states that you should wait or phone the police to have the car moved, if you try and pass and hit it, it is your fault plain and simple.
So sorry no unless they were driving the car you got no chance.

You are quite correct.

I am a legal exec and work in solicitors. I once had a case where the other side reversed into my clients car that was parked on double yellow line. The defendant tried to argue that hes was not a fault because my client was illegally parked. The judge didn't agree and found him fully at fault. The mere fact that someone was illegally parked doesn't allow you to drive(or reverse) into them. They are there to be seen, If you can't get past then you should stop nad ask them to move.

In answer to the OP Yes the car insurance will deal with the other sides claim. You won't have to pay an xs on that and if you you have a protected no claims then you will still keep the discount but you will still get a loading on the base premium before the no claims discount is applied. You will then have to decide if you want to claim of your caravan insurance for the damage to your own van. You will have to pay an xs on that policy if you make a claim and they will also load that policy.
