I have been speaking to my car insurance today sorting out my cover for france next week, insurance is fully comp, we were talking he asked where we were going etc I said I have a caravan and we go every year.
Now question I asked is while I am towing the van I have been told that van is only covered 3rd party not fully comp. so my question was what would happen let's say I have a bump that is my fault and there is damage to the van he said "it will not be covered as it is only 3rd party" I was under the impression that while connected to the car van had same cover.
He then said "don't worry because if you have a bump if you have caravan insurance then they will pay out" but I thought caravan goes under car insurance while connected to car.
Any advise would be a great help

The car is a classed as separate item to the caravan therefore you have to independent insurance for both. Some people also think that home & contents insurance cover goods kept in the caravan but they don't unless you specify under the policy exactly what you what insured and that is an extended policy. When you insure your caravan you tell them exactly what you wany insured such as an awning, caravanning equipment and clothes etc. which of course doesn't come under car insurance cover.

Most insurance companies will only cover the caravan on a third party basis whilst attached to the car ie you hit something with the van  they will pay for what you hit with the caravan but damage to the van is down to you or hopefully you have your van insured then make a claim from them

When the caravan is attached to the car you are covered for 3rd party liability only by your car insurance if your caravan damages other property; fully comp is for the car only.
Damage to your caravan is covered by the caravan insurance, do you have EU cover on your caravan policy?

spoke to caravan insurance today yes it is covered fully comp when connected to the car
I always thought it was the car insurance ( I now know this is only 3rd party) as with the old van I did not bother with insurance as it was not worth a lot of money
Cheers again can now look forward to france next week

do double check your cars EU cover, it may give you 90 days BUT not full comp cover. Many insures do not explain that the EU cover they give is only 3rd party as required by EU legistration

If you have a bump while towing and you are at fault and another vehicle is also involved, you need to claim off your car insurance 3rd party for damage to the other vehicle.
You then need to make a claim to the caravan insurance company for the damage to your caravan. So two claims have to be made.
