Hmm, not sure if I have been done or not, just picked up my brand new Bailey Olympus 460/2, 10th digit on the vin is "D" , ie. 2013, but on the electrical check sheet it says year 2012 and was electrically checked 23rd July 2012. Have I bought a brand new caravan or one that is over a year old ?
Not *done*, as in actually swindled - but, yes, caravan production begins around July/August of the preceding model year, so your van was built in July 2012 - but was designated as a 2013 model.
Ours is designated a 2011 van ( 'B' date code - purchased June 2011) but the gas & electrical tests were performed in September 2010.
Not entirely satisfactory, but the warranty begins on the day you purchased it, and when you come to sell it, all that will matter is that 2013 date code.
So, enjoy your new van (I think you made a very wise choice)

The answer is no.Model years build start from July, my 2013 was built 19 July 2012.I once bought a new Landrover in April and that was the following years model, 9 months in advance of the year.
Its not unusual for a 'new' car to be months old, even up to a year. I suppose you could say the same about motorhomes. The chassis will be built in Europe, exported to UK & delivered to motorhome factory to build on the body. By the time the 'new' vehicle is sold it could be quite old.

Ours was built in 2008, registered/bought new in January 2009 but always seems to be classified as a 2008 van ...

That can only be because the date code is from 2008 - insurers will always base their assessment on that code, rather than the actual date of first purchase and use.
A bit unfair, perhaps - I've recently seen 'new' 20012 Sprites for sale. They could easily have been manufactured in August 2011 - so are already over two years old before they leave the dealership.
However, if the date code says '2012' (even if actually assembled in 2011) then it will be a '2012' van for subsequent insurance purposes.
