My newly bought van was advertised as a 2005. Went to register it with CHRiS and they inform me it is 2004! Check with the original sellers when new and they agree. Its a 2004. Have I a case? Even if they say they were not aware of this? The first chris registration was in 2005, a year after it was built
Could have been manufactured at the end of 2004 but not sold and registered until 2005. May only be a month or two in it. It would be very hard to prove mis-selling.
It could be a 2004 model and sold ln
2005 as new as a 2004 model l had caravan like this and had work done under warranty as it was first registered in 2005
Do you have the original reciept stating the 'van was sold new in 2005? Then it is a 2005 even if it was manufactured in '04. It it was sold new in '04 & the dealer advert stated it was an '05 then you are entitled to a refund, ie cancel the deal but if you are happy with the 'van then perhaps dealer could refund you something?
If its a private sale & you paid a good price even for a 2004 then little point in pursuing anything.
Thanks for you advice and help all. Just a correction to Jack and Jon advice. If a van is manufactured in 2012 and it spends 2 years on a dealers forecourt and then sold in 2014 that does not make it a 2014 van. CHRiS registration is not necessarily the year of the van model. To find out that look at the 10th digit of the VIN number that will indicate the year of manufacture and thus that years model.
Again thanks for all your advice
To clarify things the dealer may advertise 2012 van, 2011 model but he does not have to. If the 'van was sold new in 2012, the warranty begins when the first owner picks it up & it can be advertised as a 2012 'van. But feel free to check with trading standards.
If caravan/car/washing machine is being sold at heavily discounted price it is often because it is indeed a discontinued model & old stock, if it an ex demo model it will be indicated as such & sold as used, but unused then it is brand new when collected by the first owner, manufacturer warranty will apply from that point & its 'age' is the date of delivery not the date of manufacture.
Sorry but that is not what CHRiS explained to me. Model types change from year to year so if it is 2 years old when first sold new that may not not the same model as the older version. Sure the warranty starts from first sale. Mystifying!!!!!!!
A dealer in caravans should understand the CRIS number on the caravan and recognise that it was an earlier model although it was only registered the next year.
There will be a price difference between a 2004 and a 2005 caravan which could be anything between £200 and £1000. If the dealer has acknowledged the error and you are happy with the caravan, why not ask for a goodwill gesture like a porch awning at a heavily discounted price?
If the 'van was delivered to it's first owner in 2005 then the dealer was entitled to advertise it as 2005, even if it was made in 2004. If the original dealer delivered the 'van new in 2005 & there is proof of this then the secondhand dealer is entitled to advertise it as a 2005.
If a car built in '04 was not delivered new to its first owner until mid '05 which is not unusual then the year of that car would be '05 & the reg doc would confirm & prove that.
In the case of the caravan it was not registered with Cris until delivered to it's first owner so it is a 2005.
A car dealer will not inform you of the build date of any car they deliver new or secondhand, they will advertise the car on the basis of date of registration & caravan dealers will do the same on the basis of first Cris reg.
To confuse the issue further, caravans built after about Sept. are usually next years model anyway, I think.
Hi. It amazes me how much discussion this causes, as the answer is simple. If the tenth digit on the chassis number (which is also the CRiS number) is 4, then the van is a 2004, and should be sold as such, regardless of whether it was sold in 2005, 2006, or the year 2525. It was a 2004, is a 2004, and always will be a 2004. End of.
So an '05 reg car should be advertised as an '04 if it was built in '04? All the car dealers in the country must be wrong then? Why should a caravan be different? The Cris doc is regarded as the reg doc same as a car V5.
