Hi we have been to look at a 2 berth swft 470 its says 1408 max weight is that heavy for a two berth and are swift heavy vans as we have a fleetwood at the moment and were looking at trading it in as the grandkids dont come anymore and its too big but that is 1340 max laden weight im a bit confused the swift seems more solid as in the past we have had issues with doors comin off in the fleetwood we just thought 2 berth van would be lighter in weight but its a lovely van

Greetings Maggi51.

Lets get back to basics. Tell us how big your car/vehicle is that you intend to tow with.
Without that, we are all just guessing at what you are trying to achieve.
Ideally we would like to know the kerb weight of the vehicle and the size of engine. We would also like to know the MIRO (unladen weight) of the proposed purchase and the MTPLM (Maximum allowed weight). These two weights will be near the door of the 'van on a plate.

Regards

Most 2berth Swift Challenger 470 are 1200kg max weight but it depends what year I suppose, have you got these weights from handbook/chassis plate? If written on an advert they could be wrong, they often are.

Its the size & equipment of a caravan that determines it's weight not the amount of beds, you can get 4berth caravans lighter than some 2 berths.

  • Hi this is what we got from the towing weight guide off the internet I am the one thats worried not hubby he says and the dealer its ok. Its just we had a honda crv and the clutch went towing the fleetwood £1200 to repair  and just before we changed the engine management light came on that cost £400  (admitedly it had done 98000 miles )so you can see why I am worried I just thought the lighter the van would be better has any one else had problems like this thanks guys I appreciate your input

A lighter 'van will put less stress on the car than a heavier one, but obviously driving technique comes into it. When towing, speed up gently through the gears & do not allow engine to labour uphill to avoid stressing clutch. Clutch change at 98k miles ain't too bad though & now its done it should be no more trouble.

If you want a 2berth caravan there are plenty under a tonne all up, it depends how much space & comfort you want.

On your figures you would be towing at around 75% on max weight of caravan. That should not cause any issues if it is the van you want.

    Hi Maggie again,

Clutches come and clutches go. As Jack+Jon says, it could be a question of driving style (no intention to offend Mr Maggie)

Maggie, keep your eye on Hubbies left foot when he's driving. If it's hovering around the clutch pedal, tell him. We all pick up bad habits and clutch hover is one of them.

hi thanks for the input hubby did say the honda car had done 98000 miles when clutch went and it was 13000 before we got rid for the kia  we do have a motor mover on which will add to the weight 30kg to help back it on drive as the problem we alays had and have is car and a big van parked either side of our driveway which makes it akward for reversing onto.Th other van we like is the coachman amara 2008 2 berth but thats still 1340 laden its just deciding which is better and dont understand why the coachman is the same price and 2 yrs younger unless its the spec of the vans

The problem with weights.. DO NOT TRUST THE INTERNET.

Otherwise the ideal car for your new van would be a 1000cc Peugeot 106 with 54BHP.

According to their figures it would tow 2800kg. Obviously wrong.

Newer vans are heavier, And just because a van is smaller doesnt mean its going to be any lighter. Have to keep telling my missus that.

A dealer will sell you an outfit if its legal, He doesnt care if your down to 2nd gear on the motorway. Or need to rev the engine to bits between every gearchange.

My 2 berth Hymer has a max weight of 1450kg.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
