Hi there,Just Acquired our first caravan and would like to ask a question, when storing a van for winter is it recommended to put those dehumidifiers in, the ones with the chrystals in,I used to know someone who did this every winter, is it necessary or will the van be Ok ?.
Many Thanks in advance....

Some will say YES - Some will say NO !
I would say no. Your van will have lots of ventilation holes in it as all vans require a good amount of airflow.
It therefore means that any dehumidifier is simply trying to dry out all the air in the world. As quick as you remove the moisture out the air in the van it's being replaced with more !

You will find the answers you get is that they dont work and as long as the van is ventilated you should not have problems, its a long drawn out argument.

I would say no also; that many holes & gaps for ventilation, no chance of drying out the air inside the van without blocking them all, which is counter intuitive to allowing airflow to prevent drying & cracking etc...
We put those little 3M bags of silica gel into the cupboards that are kept shut or have bedding in, in order to keep them dry, other than that, never bothered.
Give it a good airing with windows open when the sun is shining, thats all it needs.
We do tend to find it takes a while when we are away for the first time at below 9 deg C or so for all the condensation to stop appearing on the windows, but I dont think there is anything that can be done about this???

Choose a packet of nice smelling tumble paper sheets, bought Lenor for this winter could'nt find Bounce put them in cupboards, under seats, toilet area leaves a nice smell in van. Also read on here they might deter mice not sure I believe that though.

I think just visit van no and again and put heaters on for half hour.
Leave all cupboard doors open etc to allow the air to flow.

I'd second that.
My mother's (unoccupied) bungalow had a burst pipe a few years back and the insurance company put in dehumidifiers to dry it. Three months later we were still emptying 10 litres a day out - until a builder pointed out that, as the ceiling was down, we were sucking in water through the air vents in the loft and it would never stop!!
