Can anyone recommend me a decent damp meter? I don't want to pay a fortune for it but would not like to buy a second hand van without one. Are they only suitable for use with wood or can they be used for other surfaces like the pointing around brick or stone? (I only ask as we have a bit of damp around our front door - not suggesting I'm on the hunt for a stone built Van). Thanks.

We have a Protimeter (S/H from ebay) and a Rapitest (OCD? Nah).
I've just stuck the prongs of both into the same bit of wall near where I'm sitting (batteries checked first);
Rapitest = 0%
Protimeter = 8.6%
Another vote for protimeter , there far more accurate than the cheapo B&Q or Screwfix offerings .
You only get what you pay for IMO
We bought ours from a company called digital meters (check their website) they have a whole range from expensive to not so much and offer advice if you ring them
We bought the CEM non contact meter £49 and it works very well...
Bought mine off ebay for a fiver delivered from China
Before you all scoff i tested it on a van i knew had damp and the reading was 37% and i've tested it in my new van and the readings are no more than 4% any where.
So if you don't want to spend big bucks buy a new one off ebay........ Mine works for me
I bought the protimeter mini damp meter 3 weeks ago and is the best investment I've bought. It has potentially save my caravan from the dreaded damp because I have found things very early there is less repair work and no long term affects every one should have a damp meter if you own a caravan don't wait for the service once a year
I use protimeter. May I suggest if you are buying a second hand caravan then consider contacting a local service engineer and get a pre purchase inspection done. For 50 odd quid you get a once over that will not only cover damp but any safety aspects also.
