have a bailey discovery 1997 caravan, got a few teething problems but as its our first van,not really sure if its something we`re doing wrong!there seems to be no hot water after a few seconds of running, heats upfine, although I did have a few problems with running it on gas as theres no green light!!anyway it heats up to scalding now from either electric or gas,but after initial fast burst, soons slows to trickle, then nothing!also, the water pump is very noisy and keeps cutting in/out while heater auxillary switch is on?another thing, although ive filled the top tank on the thetford cassette, the rinse is absolutely pathetic(probably only reaches 2-3cm with a really good push)can anyone offer any guidance as to what I should do next-it would be much appreciated

check outside that no water is leaking out from the pump when in use.to check non return valve.fill as normal and remove the drain plug outside,at the same time get someone to switch on the pump.if ok water should gush out of the drain.if no water getting into the tank it will only trickle out.

I checked for water leaking and theres none, but today however, after an initial big splash of water from the hot tap, there is now none!!I had drained the tank down and left it to refill(at least it sounded like it was refilling as the pump was pumping on and off for a while)I suspect the pump is faulty also as its quite noisy and isn't delivering a steady stream from the cold either now!!could this contribute to the tank refilling?also, ive assumed that the tank refills automatically while its auxillary switch is on??the further I explain, the more I realise I haven't a clue!!cheers in advance, christian

removing the plug and switching on the pump for a minute will tell if water is getting into the water tank because it will come out as fast as it should when filling up.if not the NRV is blocked.

Hi on mine ,you have to open the hot and cold taps to expel the air in order to fill the hot water tank, usually the cold tap clears almost straight away I then shut the cold off and turn the hot tap on ,on a slow trickle so as not to overrun the pump when all is running smooth then put the heater on.I know I am stating the obvious ,but you did say it was your first caravan.

good point ,i turn on each hot tap until water is running free and no air then do each cold one.takes some time.

the tank is definitely filling up as,stupidly when I drained it I hadn't put the washer back in properly and most of the water had leaked out!i knew it had filled up as when I switched the pump on earlier I could hear it filling.anyway I tried removing the drain plug whilst turning on hot tap and similar to when I put the tap on in regular use, there is quite a surge for a second or 2,then a splutter, then nothing, you can hear the tap `gurgling`(is that a word?!)but no water.then after you turn the tap off,you can hear the pump(im assuming filling the tank)start up and continue intermittently for a while!!!!

Hi it,s me again, what you are describing now is air in the system, that is exactly what you get you turn the tap on you get a spurt of water the gurgling is the pump trying to expel the air ,and if you turn the tap off the air is still trapped. It takes about 10 litres to fill the hot water tank and then you have to clear the pipes.Just try

1 Turn all taps off, fill water container
2 Connect everything up (turn off the hot water drain)
3 Turn pump on
4 Open cold water tap in Kitchen until flowing freely
5 Close kitchen Tap
6 Open bathroom cold tap until running freely
7 Close bathroom tap
8 Open hot tap in kitchen about half way and wait
it takes quite a while to fill tank and purge pipes    there will be lots of spluttering before it flows freely
9 Turn off tap,do the same in bathroom
10 Turn the heater on

It could be, the way you are doing it you have a little water in the tank and the heater is turning it to steam
and that is what is causing your problems

anyway I tried removing the drain plug whilst turning on hot tap and similar to when I put the tap on in regular use

to do the flow test from the drain plug.do not open any taps.just remove the drain plug and switch on the pump.if it runs out fast then the NRV is ok.if it only trickles out then the hot water tank is not filling.

hi again, first off,i tried the tap procedure, all was going swimmingly(a nice flow starting to build)then nothing as per!nothing from kitchen or bathroom hot tap!left it a while, tried again-similar thing happened, water starts to trickle, gurgling starts to lessen, increase tap speed, then it stops, incidentally,i have the seat cover off as ive been looking at the heater and when the cold tap is switched on,there is a distinct click (like a circuit switching)but only the once, whilst the hot tap being turned on causes near constant clicking??ps Michael,i removed the drain plug with pump on and it shot out so that's ruled that out(I think!)thanks all yet again,i hope this helps you helping!!
