Hi all, I'm trying to conduct a little market research for a university project. Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated:
1. Would you be confident in alternatives to carrying a spare wheel, i.e. run-flat tyres and sealant/inflator kits?
More/equally confident
Less confident but willing to use alternatives
Not confident enough to use alternatives
2. When loading up your caravan, do you leave capacity for passengers (under the MTPLM) or do you tend to overload it when passenger weight is included? Please ignore this question
3. Would a stronger and more expensive caravan be more desirable, than a cheaper less well constructed caravan, if there was no visible difference between the two?
4. How much does weight influence your caravan choice (assuming you can tow it)?
No influence
Considered but not a priority
Weight is the deciding factor
5. Would a lighter caravan with a higher price still encourage you to buy it?
No
may be considered
Yes
6. Would you buy a second hand caravan instead of a brand new one? Any reasons why would be appreciated.
no
maybe consider it
yes
already have
Any answers to these questions would be much appreciated and any extra feedback
For question 2 you should realise that this question is completely superfluous as it is illegal to tow a trailer with passengers on board.
------------- Bill
For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
When designing questionnaires, try piloting them with a focus group before unleashing them on the big world.
If you had done this you would know that Q2 is illegal. Do you mean the number of berths in the caravan?
Have you obtained informed consent, and what is going to happen to the information you are getting from here? Who sees it/where is it stored/how is it stored/for how long? Do you have permission from posters to quote them directly if you are planning to do this?
I am very sorry about question 2, the question was intended for when the caravan is static or is the MTPLM only a towing restriction?. Thank you for your input.

Ukcs is the focus group, I guess.
Perhaps the op could explain what all this is about & what uni he/she is from? Before you can improve on existing caravan design you have to understand existing caravan design.
Why not ask some questions here in order to get a better understanding of caravans & caravanners which will assist you in wording surveys in the future?
Or better still, read "The Caravan Manual" published by Haynes, from cover to cover before "cold calling" on folks that are here to help their fellow campers, not university students.
I shuddeer to think of any serious conclusions being drawn from these questions. Please get a better idea of what caravans are about and the basic laws on towing then try again as I am sure many would be pleased to respond.
I can just hear the words on the news "research shows that........"

It so isn't. When I did my PhD work I used focus groups of about 10 people to pilot questionnaires and evaluate them, then I would reword and try again, with a different 10.
If the OP wants to quote us they need consent. Which they don't have.
I want my next caravan to be:
+ super light weight;
+ practically indestructible;
+ bigger on the inside than on the outside;
+ completely weatherproof;
+ cheap.
That's essentially the challenge facing the designers.

The MTPLM as I see it is nothing to do with 'law' the important difference being in the second word- Technical.
This then being a figure derived from various criteria by the van manufacturer to suit whatever market the vans aimed at.
On the other hand, (the at least equal or more often greater), 'safe working load' as stated on the axle governs the maximum weight it can legally towed on the road, (provided tyres and their pressures are suitable), and ultimately, the 'gross train weight' of the outfit which would indeed include passenger weight.
So from that perspective the question must be valid, just poorly put across
Your questionnaire demonstrates little understanding of your subject and I suggest more time studying less time partying and it is worrying that such little knowledge could lead to a degree but here are my answers.
1. Would you be confident in alternatives to carrying a spare wheel, i.e. run-flat tyres and sealant/inflator kits? NO.
More/equally confident
Less confident but willing to use alternatives
Not confident enough to use alternatives
NO CONFIDENCE IN ALTERNATIVES
2. When loading up your caravan, do you leave capacity for passengers (under the MTPLM) or do you tend to overload it when passenger weight is included? Please ignore this question THE QUESTION BEGGARS BELIEF. NO PASSENGERS ALLOWED IN A CARAVAN AND MTPLM IS NOT RELEVANT TO A STATIONARY VAN. A STATIC CARAVAN IS NOT THE SAME AS A STATIONARY CARAVAN.
3. Would a stronger and more expensive caravan be more desirable, than a cheaper less well constructed caravan, if there was no visible difference between the two?
WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE STRONGER AND MORE EXPENSIVE.
4. How much does weight influence your caravan choice (assuming you can tow it)?
No influence
Considered but not a priority
Weight is the deciding factor.
WEIGHT IS A DECIDING FACTOR IN MATCHING CAR AND CARAVAN.
5. Would a lighter caravan with a higher price still encourage you to buy it.
WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE LIGHTER AND MORE EXPENSIVE?
6. Would you buy a second hand caravan instead of a brand new one? Any reasons why would be appreciated.

I HAVE ONLY EVER PURCHASED USED CARAVANS. THEY MAY BE SECOND/THIRD/FOURTH HAND. THE REASONS ARE SURELY PRETTY OBVIOUS AND DON'T REALLY NEED RESEARCH I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT.
