You could buy some awning tape...
The stuff to stop the black streaks and then attach the lights to the tape by either small tack stitch or pins of some kind then feed it all back into the rail....
Get some tie wraps that are not to small or to large loop the end through itself and cut off the surplus then feed the thick part through the awning channel and thread your light rope through the loops, you will need a few to keep the contour of the van, the main thing is to get the correct size ties that fit after looping through, hope this helps as it worked for me.

Hi How about ordinary spring load washing pegs. drill a hole thro both arms of the peg you squeeze to open, clip pegs to rail say every 12/14 inches push cable into handle part of peg drop 1inch or longer nail thro holes to stop cable sliding out I think you can get pegs with holes already in this part of peg but would have to use quite large headed nails, maybe pegs will hold cable to awning rail with out holes if diameter of rope hole is big enough to grib bottom part of rail and cable. if not splash out and buy a set of rope lights that will slide through awning rail were all the lights are fitted inside a clear plastic tube about £30 for a 12/13 foot van or two sets both fed from each end of rail run cable under van and up thro gas drop out vent then refit plug and plug into 230v socket use timer to turn on when dark and off when you go to bed I have seen Just one colour lights Red white Blue Green,Yell/Amber Multi-colour and White/silver Running lights as though each bulb was turning on one after other like you see at funfairs etc there are plenty of outside rope lights for sale on the net I think you can buy by the metre with outside connections, but if you want to fit a set of twinkling butterflys or dragon flies you may have to try the peg or cable tie idea.
