I used to have my caravan sited for about 5 years. Got bored and started touring. Now I have the notion to site it again. I loved the ease of just jumping in the car on a Friday night and already being all set up when we got there. And we used the caravan much more then than we do now. Having a wee grandson is influencing the decision as it will be great for him. We were dithering between Pinetrees in Tyndrum and Kippford in Dumfries and Galloway. Have decided on Kippford because it is open all year. Its not a lifetime choice, will take it year to year.
What we did before, and will do again, is get our tent in order and have a box with everything we need for camping all ready and will camp if we fancy a change of scenery (Tyndrum being a definate). I'm quite excited at the changes and going down to Kippford tomorrow to choose our pitch.
we have been thinking of siting our 'van ( it's in storeage at present ) but as Babyfish the cost is putting us off ,cheapest we can find locally for a pitch with 10mths access is £1700 for 12mths.
yes I can see the advantages, no pitching hassles, more useage, etc but £1700 against £395 storage fee's the sums just don't add up for us at present
------------- no tin tent outings booked as yet ,just another cruise in Sept' booked so far
We love our seasonal pitch, this will be our 3rd year. It's really the only option for us as I hate towing but love my caravan. Agree it's not a cheap option however if we did tour an used the caravan as much as we do now I am sure the pitch fees and fuel if added up would not be too far off what we are paying.
For us it's taken away the stress we used to have an we really relax an the kids love it, the weekends last longer too as in the summer it's often early evening by the time we leave
At present we are lucky enough to be able to have the pitch plus a holiday abroad an I can see us continuing as long as finances allow.
Enjoy your season !
Yes, it is definately not cheap but if we use it as we did before we really will get our money's worth. Most weekends, all bank holidays, and a couple of whole weeks. And it can be used all year with no restrictions timewise. Also, I will drive down and have time to myself (i loved doing that before) as I get more holidays than OH and can also go with my daughters. Take into account not towing the 80 miles each way I reckon it will be expensive but worth it - we will see how it goes this year. Cost for 12 months including electric £1765.
We do the same, it's a great compromise.
The van is always there through the season to use at your leisure, no messing around, awning stays up for the season, home from home with a nice twist.
Then take out the tent if we want to go anywhere different with the kids.
Works for us.

Having just spent Christmas and new year on kippford, I am slightly jealous, but just a bit too far for us to site
We went down today and decided against Kippford. Fabulous site, have been there often but seasonal pitches were not very big and the choice of pitches left had no views or outlook - important for us if siting for a year, not so important if only there for the odd weekend. Tyndrum will suit us better I think, although only open for 8months - another brilliant site and I was already torn between them. Going up there tomorrow
We pay £1900 for a 10 month season however electric is extra, the site has a bar, bistro an indoor pool. Major plus point for us is the distance it's only 45 mins away so very handy fit going at the drop of a hat!! We did 60 nights last year which we would never have done if touring. Hope all goes well with your visit let us know how you get on
Pinetrees Tyndrum it is, all agreed and signed. We knew as soon as we drove in today that Tyndrum was the site for us - we loved it when we were there this year, loads of walks, nice views, great vibe and friendly hard working wardens.
Nice one..we use Pinetrees often with caravan and tent camping.
Nice and clean with good facilities.
We have thought about a seasonal pitch but still enjoy the touring aspect at present so its on the back burner for now.

I'm with you there Vangoman re the touring but we are finding that we dont have the time to tour furher afield. There are very few sites that I like within a 2-hour drive from home so we werent using the van often enough, using the same sites each time and only managing to get distances by eating into prime holiday time if you know what I mean. Caravanning/camping is a lifestyle for us, not a hobby, and we want to be able to use it as much as possible to get away from the rat-race. Also, with a 2 year old grandson it seems easier to have a ready set-up van with his stuff/toys already there. We have been round the houses though, many times, and siting the vsn is our decision for this year, next year it may change again. But we will enjoy all the Tyndrum/Glencoe area has to offer in the meantime.
Yes can relate to not having the time to use the van as often as you like.
My wife and I worked 12hr shifts for a good number of years and whatever van we had was sitting in the drive hardly being used.
We sold the van after caravanning since I was in my early twenties and then after 3 years bought another. Early retirement and my wife working part time allows us to be as flexible as we like and can go midweek for breaks etc.
I think we will do the same as yourself at some point and as you say if you don't like it after a year just change site or go back to touring..

You can use the campsite search on here, unfortunately due to the increasing popularity there are not many cheap options, on th coast you could be looking at fee,s of up to £2,000
