Are all caravans CRIS registered when they are new or do you have to register them yourself? Also, if I buy a second hand van do I have to inform CRIS?
When we got our van. ..2nd hand we contacted Cris to register it ourselves. When we sold it we gave the new owners the Cris paperwork so they could register it. Don't know about brand new shiny vans but hope to one day

All UK built caravans built since 1992 have been registered with Cris from new. Foreign built caravans of any age right up to new may well not be. When sold secondhand it is up to the new owner to notify Cris, Cris reg is not a legal requirement & as caravans get older, new owners often do not bother to inform Cris. Cris is not a legal requirement so the answer to your question is no but it is advisable.
You will often find older caravans for sale that have not had Cris reg updated & in fact many caravan owners & first time buyers know nothing of Cris. If you buy an old caravan that has not been updated then it is not advisable to do so as it might come up as stolen several owners ago & you will get a bill from the insurance co. that paid out for original loss or you lose 'van.
When we bought our used (2008) caravan it had one previous owner. When we went to register it, it turned out it had never even been registered to the original owner! It was still registered to the original manufacturer/dealer (can't remember which). So it's all a bit hit and miss and clearly even some new vans aren't registered if the dealer isn't doing his job properly.
It's worth registering it though, as it's one of the questions a prospective buyer might ask when you come to sell the van in future. But it's by no means compulsory.
