Any advice please on the best route to Whitby North Yorkshire from South....Leeds.I'm due to go July so weather should be fine but it will be my forth time out.I recently drove without the van on a dry run from Scarborough to whitby on the A171 but thats got some steep hills too...obviously not as bad as the Whitby Pickering road along hole horcum and blue bank.I'm that nervous that I'm thinking of cancelling the booking. My outfit is a passat highline diesel 2.0 estate 140bhp 2010 model and I'm towing a 24ft single axle van laden weight roughly 1400kg.... the weight on my car is 1572kg which means I'm roughly 90% caravan club match.I am worried I've not got a powerful enough car to get up steep hills or am I being paranoid ? hopefully the later...on straight roads and power along the motorway it's smooth and effortless that I can forget it's there.top n bottom can anyone advise me....much appreciated nervous hill climber : /-------------
I dont think you will have a problem. My mate regularly goes to Whitby from here. He has a 2 litre Golf and a 24 foot van - crammed to the gunnels! I am also going at Easter, but my tow car is a bit bigger than a Golf.
that sounds 're assuring.... which route tho ? everyone says stay clear of the .moors road from Pickering and to go to Scarborough up the A171....is this the route you and your mate takes ?
I towed a 1450kg van with a 2.0tdi passatt estate along the pickering to Whitby road last summer. The only problem we encountered was a HGV which was crawling at about 5mph. Gave us chance to take in the beautiful scenery !
Towed with a 1.9 diesel vectra and a van similar weight, went on the A169 past Fylingdales radar station with no problems, just remember not to let the revs drop too much,my satnav tried to send me along a minor road to my site, when I reached the junction, there was a sign (Unsuitable for Caravans)so kept on the main road and found my site ok.drove along it the next day out of curiosity(no van)and found out it was like climbing a cliff face.

There are no problems at all in towing along the A64 to Malton, then the A169 to Pickering and on to whitby. Your car is more than sufficiently powerful to take that caravan wherever you want in this country. The last time I towed over there was with a 115bhp mondeo tdci towing my 1450kg hymer and as you say the drive was effortless.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
If going Scarborough to Whitby on A171 at Cloughton the road turns sharp left, there is two hills, one short the other a bit longer, after the sharp turn give it some welly and you will fly up it,the longer one have a run at it, there is a overtaking lane so no problems, the road is a bit bendy in places but nothing to worry about

We always go round the Leeds ring, A64 to Malton - Pickering, and straight up over the top to Whitby.
In fairness, i am actually going to Hinderwell to the west of Whitby at Easter, so wont go the above route this time. Itll be Blubberhouses to the A19, A172 and that way. You can go this way to Whitby as well, but itll be longer from Leeds.

sorry to bother you....but I'm just worried as I read on one of these forums that a chap did this road and on the long hill with the crawler lane he was stuck behind a bus with obvious gearbox problems...the chap couldn't overtake as traffic wouldn't let him out....the bus stopped dead so he obviously ended up at a halt....he couldn't do a hill start because the car kept stalling.....what on earth do you do in this situation or is it very rare....am I over panicking....
hi loulee i drove from co durham to whitby from a19 to a171 in my seat leon 16 tdi ecomovtive towing elddis hurraicane 3 of us a cat and all the gear no probs look at route on google
We towed all over Cornwall with our Passat 1.9 tdi 130 bhp - a 4 berth caravan about the same weight as yours - it was more than fine, it had power to climb hills all day, and it needed it in Cornwall.
You're OK, it's a smashing car x

did you fully load the car or van ? the dealer we bought the van from told us to put the weight in the caravan...or at least all heavy items in it over the axle...they said if we fully weigh the car down with all heavy the heavy stuff then it's more strain on the cars suspension....so to put half in caravan (heavy stuff) then half (lighter stuff) in boot of car.... would you agree ?

All I can say is he didnt read the road situation,, its not a busy road and would have had plenty of room to ease out to the overtaking lane, your outfit would have no trouble that way, how ever, going down the A64 into Scarborough then to Whitby the last bit into Scarborough in summer is slow
