I use a small solar panel to keep the battery on trickle charge while the old tin tent's in storage. ours is non-descript' all the way from china via ebay cost 12.99 inc p&p and has kept our battery topped up nicely over 2 winters now

in a word ,yes, ours sits in the front window of the van connected to the battery which is in it's battery box, the connecting cables go through into the battery box via an access hole under the seating

My smart charger is only 2-4W and that charges up fine, although it might take a few days to reach fully charged status. I would think for just topping up, 4w max would be fine.
I think you could also change the connection and use the cigarette type connection, that's fitted to most new vans for all the different phone chargers as that comes directly off the battery
