Don't know about public ones Steve , but I used one at a local quarry/aggregates yard . They said not to come in early when the lorries were leaving ,but any time in the middle of the day . They let me weigh the car and van together , then each singly, they asked me for a donation for the local hospice . they were pleased I gave a Fiver . hope that helps ,
They will often not charge for a check weigh, without a ticket. The weight can be displayed on a board in front of you when you have driven onto plate or you can see it when you go to the window of the weighbridge office.
My local weighbridge charges £5 a weigh and is a long platform so I can weigh car and caravan on one charge and then drop the caravan for the caravan weight. It is more out of interest that I weigh the combination but if they are not busy there is no rush and it is handy to keep the printouts in the car to at least show that you have bothered to check and are aware of weight regs.

Ours charges £5 a time, but remember that they generally only have to be within 5% so can over or under read 5% which on a 1500kg caravan is as much as 75kg. Generally they will rather over read than under read.
VOSA or council weigh bridges are far more accurate. Our caravan weigh nearly 100kg over weight but when done on a calibrated scale was within the MTPLM, but you get a good guideline.

Weights & measures have monitored and tested them ever since I operated one back in the late 1960's.
Our own local weighbridge is scaled in 5 kg divisions and must be accurate to those divisions regardless of the total weight.
As a number of public weighbridges weigh up to 10 tons several times a day, it would need to be calibrated every month to ensure that is accurate to within 5kgs which is highly unlikely. Either way it is always a good thing to get an idea of the weight of your outfit.
