With the summer season approaching I thought it appropriate to remind caravanners and motorhomers to be careful that their skylights are properly secure before driving off.

I have often seen caravans being towed with the skylight partially open but the worse incident was a couple of years ago when I was driving in the centre lane of a motorway overtaking slower traffic and approaching a caravan being towed in the nearside lane. Suddenly the skylight flew off and went spinning high in the air over the motorway. It was one of the larger type about 16" square?

There was nothing I could do but watch it and fortunately I passed underneath it. It hit the roof of a car travelling fast in the outside lane just above the windscreen. As far as I could tell the windscreen didn't smash but a couple of inches lower and it may well have done and could have caused a multicar pile up. I would imagine the car would have a nasty crease in the roof nonetheless.

The skylight then went spinning off into the opposite carriageway of the motorway and I have no idea if it caused any problems there.

Apart from that serious incident I would hate to think what mess might be inside a caravan if it happens to be raining and the skylight is left open.

It is an easy thing to forget so do be careful.

A good reminder.

I always think it's best if one person hitches up and does all the checks before setting off.

We managed to set off once with the Jockey wheel not retracted properly and it turned out we both thought each other had done it !

From then on I have done all the checks. Including checking the skylights!
