Hi,new to this forum and caravaning.Has anyone used one of the lorry sat navs you can buy on ebay?Dont know wether to try one of these or get my tom tom upgraded.
All SatNavs have senile moments. The trick is using it as a backup and taking notice of the roadsigns. Dont let it distract you from the signs.
I have used most of them and some have said turn left where there are no roads just a field.
Going up the M6 (northbound) in the outside lane as i pass under the roundabout for J10 i think, It says take the 3rd exit.
Suddenly saying recalculating and tells me to make a U turn.
Also had one take me off the main A road i was on down a lane then a sharp right and bring me out on the same road it just told me to turn off from, Just a few hundred yards further up.
just got one and it tells me to turn right into the village instead of left to get out of it. trouble is, turning right will get me out, but it is the long way round. When I come to use it places anew, how do I know it is reliable? I resisted buying one until now. Maybe i should not have been so soft. But when when it comes to stange places you need something better than a simple map. I needed one in Paris when forced onto a typical French detour which stops signing after a lilpmetre or so. you pays yer money.........and then feel ripped off
Best tip I can give if you have an Android phone is DO NOT USE GOOGLE MAPS NAVIGATION. It cannot distinguish between roads and rights of way, and in remote areas you could well find yourself stuffed .
If travelling outside of my comfort zone I use Copilot on my phone, and set to RV mode when towing. This avoids low bridges and narrow roads, but normally get out the AA road atlas and plan the bulk of my route on there, only leaving the last mile or 2 to the sat nav.
I have a Tom Tom Start 60 and bought the europe camper map which is around £80, I have had it about 18 months and had no issues, yes common sense is required but the trips we did have been ok, I live near a narrow bridge, a car route will take me over it, the caravan mode routes around. it allows you to choose between car, motorhome, car & caravan and lorry. you input length, weight, height, maximum speed etc. I believe the downloadable map will only work on certain Tom Tom models.

then click on DISCOVER SOMEWHERE NEW
IN THE Europe drop down box scroll down to find the camper map.

After several interesting experiences using a Snooper satnav and the official CCC & CC site POI's, I'll never rely on a satnav alone when towing. Now We always check a map & check with the site itself for any route/access information.
The last experience was at CC at redhill, where there is no mention of reccommended route to site on their website, the satnav takes you up a single lane, with very few passing places, only to be told by the warden when we arrived "you went the wrong way & it does say in the Handbook!"
Best advice if in any doubt ring the site in advance and ask them !
