Hi, we've just returned from our 1st caravan outing, we bought the van secondhand from a friend, we noticed a small patch of black mildew (I think) on the wooden slats under the seats. We completely panicked at first thinking we've bought a damp van but there are no other signs of damp/wet/smell but now wondering is this a common problem and if so what an we do? Thanks
You can sometimes find condensation under mattress after you have been sleeping on it for a few days so they should be lifted up & allowed to dry otherwise you will get mildew. When caravan is unused its good to stand cushions on their edges & do this after a trip of a few days as well.
When caravan is standing unused you should also ensure it is ventilated. There are probably vents in floor & toilet compartment so leave doors open to allow air circulation.
Mildew is not always caused by a leak in the van condensation can cause this too if the caravan is not aired properly especially just before being stored over winter.
Most caravan windows have 2 position locks on them so I normally put the ones by the beds in the second position so not fully closed which helps with ventilation without causing much draft.
Also anything like clothes or bedding stored under the seats/beds should be in a waterproof bag
A weak solution of bleach or a bathroom cleaner should get ride of any mildew but always try on a small area first
