Hi,

I'm looking for some advice on winches.

I want to get a winch to be able to move the van from and to the side of the house accross a slight grassy slope so that we can get the van out and back all seasons.

I want to mount the winch on a moveable post and I think I need 4 sites to slot the post into to be able to move the van out and back through an angle.

I've checked out some web sites but I can't quite get how to work out what rated winch I need for a rolling load. I (think I) understand the bit about RLP, layers and gradients but I can't quite work out how to put all this together to get to what rated winch I need to pull max 3000lb up a slight gradiant no more than 20% and no more than 30ft.

I was thinking of getting a simple manual winch but the prices on ebay for elecric ones don't seen too bad.

Any advice anyone?

Anyone care to share their experiences with winches?

Vanman

The standard rule for car winching is go for TWICE the rating,i,e, if you want to pull a 1 ton car,get a 2 ton winch. In you case that would be a 6,000lb. winch.Go for the 12volt electric one with remote control,(saves a lot of hard work!).

Hi Vanman, I've got a manual winch which is fitted with a 50mm ball and locks into the van hitch whilst other end of cable hooks on post or in my case convenient tree.

I note u r in Kent, if u r anywhere near me u are welcome to borrow it and try it b 4 spending hard earned. Am in sunny Deal by the sea (Joke). I no longer use it 4 the van as have now got van in storage, much easier on the arthritus !!............Mick

I have the same as mickeyb, I bought a hand winch and mounted it on a metal plate and put the ball part of a tow ball on the plate (Towsure sell one ready made up) this locks into the drawbar and my anchor post can be moved to 3 different locations, simple but effective.
