Michaelwood on the M5 has a good reputation. Personally I would never go into the Avonmouth one.
Yes, Michaelwood is a proper (drive on-park-drive off) motorway service area. I'd also avoid Gordano at Avonmouth - if you need fuel/toilets/coffee/sleep etc urgently you won't be happy waiting for the traffic lights on the multi-lane roundabout!
Further to the original question, we are going to Cornwall later in the year. I am conscious that the M5 ends just after Exeter, so are there any suggestions as to the best M5 services for a re-fuel with a caravan before leaving the M5 (as you never know what you are going to get space-wise once you get on to A roads).
------------- Greenhill Leisure Park, Oxon - Apr 2016
Gunvenna, St Minver, Cornwall - July 2016
Lincoln Farm, Standlake, Oxon - Sept 2016
There are several garages on the A30 west of Exeter that are easy to get into with a 'van on the back, and are appreciably cheaper than the motorway services.
Thanks, was a bit concerned as this will be our longest trip yet and haven't needed to re-fuel on route before. Didn't want to leave it too late on the trip and be forced to use a garage with very little manoeuvring room!

You must be very wealthy if you are considering refuelling at Motorway Services..... last time I looked it was about 25p more per litre for fuel of both types!!
I Am going down M5 but have heard Michael Woods have changed their caravan park and can only now take 10 vans and if full because of layout you then have to leave the services does anybody know if this is right

I was fretting about this myself. The first time I had to refuel on-route, I did use the Mway services, as they are incredibly huge spaces! And first I walked over to see how and where I would go with my caravan on tow. It wasn't hard at all, and gave me confidence to try it with other petrol stations.
If you fill up on a supermkt forecourt with large caravan in tow you often need to drive forward right up to building & then turn to avoid clouting pump or adjacent car with back end of caravan as it swings round. Its a good idea to get your passenger to stand & direct you where they can see both you & 'van rear end on your blind side.
If you make it off the M5 there are sevices just off the A30 signposted to Whiddon Down......there was a services sign post last year. We use there for fuel.
Meeting up it's Taunton Deane for us as we have found Michaelwood very busy at times being the first services for quite a while coming from the East. We have queued up on the motorway trying to get in!
------------- Started with a motorbike and tent.......my gallery, my life.
Sedgemoor about 10 miles past bristol, very popular with caravans, go on google maps and type into search bar, sedgemoor motorway services uk, when it opens zoom in and
look at the grey area bottom right opposite the lorries this area is caravans only and i have never seen anything else in this area but caravans.
Not at the end of M5 but a good place to stop
Kernow the best pace to top up, and again not at the end of the M5 is Cribbs Causway just off the motorway at bristol if you look at it on google maps the filling station is at the Asda supermarket, when you come off the motorway just keep going left and very easy to get your caravan in, just take care going through the pay booth on the way out, and turn right at the roundabout when you leave the petrol station to head yourself back to the motorway
