I know this may be a silly question but my sister is looking to buy a lightweight caravan, 4 berth, what makes are best for reliability and good workmanship or are they all much the same. She's looking for something about 5 years old. Thanks for your help.

If you read this forum you'll see that problems occur in most makes of caravan with damp being the most dreaded problem even in a brand new van.

How light does this caravan need to be? How many berths does she really need? If she needs 4 beds she may need the extra living space of a 5/6 berth. What is she towing with? The answers will give us an idea of what to suggest. We've had Lunar and Bailey caravans because of their lightweight ranges but most makers have a range which is fairly light.

The caravan is for her and hubby and occasionally a 4 year old child. The max weight would be 1200kg.

Just to get you started what about something like a Bailey Ranger 470/4 ?

I think they have a MTPLM of around 1100Kg (This will vary slightly depending on the year) and they have good size end bathroom.

Or something like an Adria Altea 390 ?

I would rate the Adria in terms of build quality over the Ranger, but that's just my opinion !

Our Ranger 460/4 is 1184kg and has a fixed bed so may not be ideal with a young child. The other Rangers are similar weights with different sleeping arrangements.

I would look at the Venus and Lunar caravans. They are reasonably lightweight.

The Firestorm does look reasonable but it's much older than they wanted. I expect it's too heavy as well but it'll be a good buy for someone.

Having looked at many 4 Bert caravans with an all up weight of 1300kg and unladed weight of 11000kg to suit the Diesel Golf I drive.

The one I liked best was the Adria Altea Tay 432 PX or the Venture caravans model SportLine 432PX.

Although a fixed bed is suitable for 4 persons.

Various reason why I liked this van, one of which is that the roof is built to accept an Air-Con unit should you need to add one.

Other than that the layout and build ticked all my box's so will probably start looking for a 4 year old model, with a view to purchase in 2020! funds permitting of course.
