I bought a high gain aerial as at times we use remote sites and generally get an excellent signal.
If the mast is practically next door as mentioned in one of the posts I just use the status aerial on the roof.
Sometimes have to turn the external aerial vertical instead of the usual horizontal to get a signal, no big deal.
Never experienced too strong a signal though but then it depends on where you are.

The vast majority of TV transmitters in the UK use horizontal polarisation. In a very few cases where there are 'relay transmitters' vertical polarisation is used.
If you have turned the aerial vertical this would reduce the signal received from a strong local transmitter - or you may have just been in an area served by a relay station.
The aerial is only gainy in the direction you point it. If you are in a very strong signal area if you point it in the opposite direction this will also have the effect of reducing the signal.
In order to be specific you would need to supply site details and aerial configuration details.
To re-iterate what I said in an earlier post even those saucer shaped status aerials should get a good signal now in the majority of the UK
As I said I sometimes use remote sites and the last one two weeks ago in Arisaig ( West coast of Scotland) and the site owner told us to use the vertical position to get the best signal..and he was right, after all he would know best living there.
I wasn't asking for advise..I was saying what worked for me with 40+ years experience in caravanning.
I don't really bother with techie talk..I just do what works best,its as simple as that.

The free app on iphone tells you which mast gives the strongest signal and if its vertical or horizontal, l have got a perfect picture every time without turning the aerial in half dozen directions to get a picture
Hi, I gave up on tv aerials, spent my money on a cheap camping satellite system, once you get used to setting it up its done in minutes, and you don't have to keep re-tuning your tv for different sites.
No such thing as a digital aerial, you either have a signal or you don't.
I have the Avtex and can usually get a signal at most places. Sometimes I use the sucker on the roof (make sure you clean the bit you're going to stick it to, first!) and sometimes I just put it on top of the wardrobe, which in my van is quite low, 6ft max. It still gets a signal if there is one.
