We are new to caravanning, have just come back from our second weekend in it. It's an older van, which we love, but there was so much to learn that the first time we concentrated on the pitching, setting up and using the gas. So we went to the tap to fill the kettle and used the toilet block. This weekend however, we set up the water and awning and used the toilet. Only used the shower onsite because it was free and really hot. And I walked there in a shirt and knickers. No getting dressed three times here!
as far as our tin tents facilities go, it has a dedicated shower room ( separate to the loo), a flushing loo, gas blown air heating, all of which rarely get used, as far as we are concerned at least,
the shower and gas room heater are used only on the rare occasions we stop on a site that has no or limited amenities.
the loo being the exception and even then it's only used for liquid waste except in absolute emergencies
we use a small oil filled heater to heat the van ,after all why go to the expence of booking an ehu pitch and then NOT use the electricity we're already paying for, ditto the showers , can't see the sense in humping gallons and gallons of water to and from the tin tent if I don't have to.
but hey if that's your thing go for it, theres no right way or wrong way ,each to their own

i can't figure out why anyone would use a shower in a caravan when the manufactures can't keep rain water out of the body,what chance do you have putting water and steam in a shower cubical that its not leaking into frame which won't show up for years to come.
I understood that the weight of an awning pulling on the rail was much more likely to cause damp than a shower in a dedicated cubicle (rather than a combined loo/shower). We use CLs/CSs that often don't have facilities. We don't use an awning, we bought a large van instead.
Fairly new to caravanning after a couple of years in a FC, but when we were looking for a van we decided that we wouldn't really use a shower and to have a larger washroom would just eat into the living space!! So ended up with a 2005 Coachman Pastiche 420/2 with an end kitchen and side washroom. That way we will use everything in the van apart from the shower!! Had it less than two months and we've already done 19 nights....love it!!
We mainly use out own facilities as we go to basic sites, and rallies. However if we're on a commercial site, my 12 year old will be sent to the shower block because she can easily drain 2 aqua rolls! I say each to their own and if you are happy to pay for serviced sites, then why not use the facilities you've paid for. As for duvalays, we have a. New caravan (our 3rd but my 8th). It's the most comfy bed ever. The previous beds left me with back ache so I'd have been tempted by a memory foam topper.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
