What do you folks do, if after leaving a site and heading for home towing a caravan, and you want to stop in a town/village for a bit of shopping/ sight seeing etc.
where do you park, or dont you?
my last camping vehicle was a T25 volkswagen campervan and of course we had no problem stopping off and parking etc. But! I'm not sure with a caravan on the back.
I don't either. I used to with a small campervan, but all my sightseeing is done whilst the caravan is plonked on a site now. The only time I park up is either in a motorway service station, or a large layby.
I miss my campervan for that very reason, but not having to pack everything away to go out for the day makes up for it!
Usually only stop at motorway or other trunk road services but I can't really see a problem with stopping in town in designated car park or roadside.Supermarket car park also.
Would probably need 2 parking spaces so 2 tickets. watch for height barriers too.
We have even left caravans in laybys and driven into towns, not sure whether we were brave or stupid but never had a problem no one ever interfered with the vans.
Quite a few towns have lorry parking or supermarket car parks are often easy enough to use too.
Might be because we wild camp a lot but we just throw ourselves into situations and say a little prayer, not had a problem so far.
I always wonder when I read on here that people wont park and leave their vans when travelling. What do they do normally when they leave their vans, even on sites.
Cars locked, hitch locked, wheel locked. Apart from when its on the storage, this is how the van is left at all other times. I am not big on stopping off but on long runs, I'll use the loo, grab a cuppa, stretch my legs,Sunday lunch occasionally. I take some basic precautions like parking in full view if poss, some where nice and busy if I can.
Caravanning for me is about having a bit of freedom to go as I please, or stopping to go.
------------- Just saying
If all is not lost where is it then?
Personally I wouldn't even risk leaving my van unattended on a motorway service station, never mind without a tow car in a lay by, having read stories on here about vans being nicked while you were off for a cuppa in the restaurant.
If we want to break the journey home (which we often do) we usually pull into a site on route. That way we can book a basic pitch and have an "extra" day in the area and an overnight stay, with an early start for the second leg next day. Works for us and no worries about leaving the van in a vulnerable place.
And no-one has ever produced actual EVIDENCE that a van has been stolen whilst the owners went for a cuppa at a motorway service area, despite me asking numerous times. Always it has been hearsay!!
