I'm after opinions, we've always used melamine mugs, plates etc in our tent & folding camper but as we've recently bought a caravan I was thinking perhaps it might be time to change to the 'real' version.
So what do other people use, and if it's crockery what's the best way of transporting them when we're towing?
Melamine for everything but not for tea and coffee. Ceramic or whatever for that. We are still using our melamine that we first bought 25+ years ago. But real mugs . Also carry one plate that can be put in oven or microwave . Just in case
Yep,we recently changed our melamine for Corelle linky. The sets come with stoneware mugs but we don't use them, it has to be fine china

As well is two words!

Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
Agree with the above. Melamine mugs get stained too easily. The more crockery you carry the less weight of other stuff can go in the van when travelling. Nice dinner service but no change of clothes!!!

Melamine is no good for a brew. I have had a few over the years crack when pouring in boiling water.
I have just bought a set of Correlle plates and bowls, really nice quality
My crockery cupboard is above the sink. A couple of times the crockery has become dislodged as I've been travelling and has fallen out when I open the cupboard. Plus, as Phil says, it's lighter and you have to think of weight with a caravan.
We used china everything when we first upgraded to a caravan, and when our payload was more generous. I recently weighed the china set- as you do and my jaw hit the floor when I saw how much it weighed. Needless to say, we invested in some melamine plates & bowls, but still use china mugs because tea tastes horrible out of plastic.
We now have both, started with melamine but recently upgraded to Corelle and love them, (not their mugs or cups though as already mentioned they are not the same material. We like a 'proper' ceramic cup or mug and yes, they do get chipped or broken occasionally but the melamine ones stain so easily especially if you use a teabag in the mug when brewing up. There is something in the sound or feel of cutting on a melamine plate that I don't like, personal choice in the end.
