Hi all - loving this forum! This is my first post so sorry if I'm posting in the wrong area - if so, admin pls delete. Lots of questions here goes...

We are looking at buying a second hand 4 berth van between 2004-2005 but have fell in love with the Elddis Crusader (Aurora 2005/06) and some of the Compass range. I would greatly appreciate your views on the ranges good, bad and ugly.
I am petrified about buying one with damp so would appreciate advice on best meter to buy whilst looking at vans?
Should I buy from a dealer so I get a bit of come back if theres a prob or is private ok?
What sort of percentage can I knock a dealer down with being thrown out of the dealership/owners garden?
And finally we will be buying a Mazda 6 2.0 ltd diesel 2008 - would this pull a 4 berther- the Aurora is 1416kg I think - other half is used to towing a trailer with a car on but never pulled a van.

We are using the time between now and next spring to fully research into buying a fab van for my little family and am so excited but scared as hubby is basically letting me get on with it as he works away - eek!

Really appreciate any help. Have learnt loads from this site already!

Cheers, Tracey

Best time to buy a caravan is at the end of the season (assuming you have somewhere to store it) as prices go up in the spring.

Whattowcar.com is useful for checking whether car/caravan outfits match and will tow ok.

whether you buy from a dealer or private a pre purchase inspection by an independent mobile caravan mechanic is very advisable. You can buy a cheap meter on ebay or from your local DIY store. You then must learn how to use it as different weather conditions can cause mis readings. Use this to check each van you view BUT when you find the van you want to buy call in the independent mobile mechanic it may cost you £50/60 but could save you hundreds of pounds

1416 is the mass in running order isnt it. Groiss weight 1600kg or so?

Thats about 100kg OVER your cars kerbweight.

You should be looking at vans with a gross laden weight of 1300kg.

All fab advice - thank you I really appreciate it as its a minefield for a newbie! I re-check vans with the gross weight now I'm clearer on what it means.

Many thanks,

Tracey

MTPLM is effecitvely the max gross weight for the van.

Also (depending on your age) don't forget that if your combinaton is over 3500kg (thats the GW of the car plus the MTPLM of the van) you will need B+E on your licence to tow it.

In answer to your origianl post I would strongly recommend getting an inspection done by a local mobile NCC approved caravan engineer, even if buying from a dealer. This will cost £50-£70 and is well worth it and will also check for damp (so saves you £20 in buying a meter)

Other things to check are if the van has a full service history. While no guarantee this is a good sign that the van has been looked after and any problems caught early and fixed. Also check over the front and rear panels and look for any cracks, these are typically common up at the top where the side panals join the rear panel. Certain makes (Bailey been one) suffered from these for several years and the only real fix is a new panel which isn't cheap!

Buying from a dealer you will get beween 6-12 months warranty but will pay more than buying private so its a bit of a trade off. Buying bwteen now and Feb is a good time as the dealers will be quiet and you might get a better deal.

In terms of your Mazda I would take it to a weigh bridge and see what the actual kerbweight is. This should be done with someone in the drivers seat and 3/4 tank of fuel. You might be surprised as sometimes the figures quoted on the internet can be lower than the actual weight as it does vary depending on the car and its various options. Take 85% (approx) of the actual weight as a guide and you then have a MTPLM to look for on any vans

Good luck and happy hunting!
