Hi all, my daughters about to pi k up a 1997 4 berth bailey ranger. The van has a gas heater which blows air through the vents. Does this kind of heating use a lot of gas, or would it be wiser to use an electric heater?

Not sure if this helps but does the heater not also work on electric?
Our 96 Rallyman has blown air heating which can be run on gas or electric from the same heater ( if you see what I mean)

Now I am lost .. can you run an electric heater form a battery or are we talking about using electric hook up?
If its electric hook up then surely its got to be cheaper than gas..
Truma blown air heater? ie gas burner & electric fan, so yes it will use a fair bit of gas(around 150grams/hr)unless it also has electric heating element to run off ehu but possibly not on a caravan of that age. If you are on Ehu easy way is to plug in a fan heater & save gas..

I have found in the past a 950 kw fan heater from Aldi with thermal cut out adjustable are Ideal they use very little electric on fan and more on heat that most fan heaters.
Thankyou for the replies. I have a freedom sunseeker, which doesn't have a built in heater. We just use an electric heater as only use ehu. So have never used gas heating. Not sure what heater it is as they haven't picked it up yet. The dealer is having a gas engineer check all the gas pipework. I think my daughter and partner will enjoy having a caravan. She's itching toget it and have a break!

Our 1999 Ranger had blow air heating with electric or gas. I'll be amazed if yours doesn't have the electric option. The control panel had a button and lots of little lights. Pressing the button cycled through the various options of elec slow fan, gas slow fan, etc. There will also be a spur unit (like a socket but only a fuse holder and fuse, maybe red light). This needs to be on for electric heating.
If using gas, it's more efficient generally not to use the blow air. Just use the gas as a convector heater.

Gas consumption: 30-280g/h.
Rated thermal output: 3400w.
taking these figures as valid.. flat out i would be looking at a 6kg bottle of gas giving me an actual 24 hours of usage.. or at half power 48 hours of actual usage.. or £5 quid a day (12 hours on) with the gas costing £20 quid per 6kg bottle..
in the winter one 6kg bottle per week with a bit of care.. maybe.. he he
Hi Ferretlady, I too have the 1997 4 berth Bailey Ranger.
The fire runs on Gas or Mains Electrics and the fan (blown air system) runs on 12v electric.
So when you are not on EHU you can still have the gas heating on and blown air from the 12v fan.
On EHU you have the choice of either gas or electric heating.
With either gas or electric, whether you choose to use the 12v fan or not is up to you.
The 12v fan can also be used on its own to circulate cold air on a hot summer's day.
The heater, when used on gas, is far quicker to get up to temperature and if used in conjunction with the fan unit, it is thermostatically controlled from the control panel.
I do not know how much gas the fire uses as we have only been using this van this year and it has been too warm, so far, to need any form of heating.
For safety sake, because we have two dogs (see gallery), for night time heating later in the season, we will be using a small oil filled radiator for overnight heating.
