A caravan that price & age is always an ongoing project, just do repairs as necessary & obviously service running gear & change tyres if over about 5yrs old.
Its fair to say to run an old caravan you do need to be a bit of a diy'er, just keep squirting the PU sealant into the outside seams & the inside dries out eventually. Works for me.
In case the op is not familar with the term, us owners of elderly caravans affectionately refer to them as...crappy old caravans....CCC's for short...Good luck with it, glass half full & all that
Thanks for the positive comments. I checked the sealing and it was real tight and there didn't seem to be any gaps. I realise it is a work in progress and I intend to enjoy the experience.
I tried to pull away and it wouldn't move the hand brake was on. The farm where we are going to store the caravan has a fellow that provides servicing, which I will take advantage. What do you think is the best club to join - there seems to be quite a few. Thanks
If its been parked for a long period, ie yrs, with handbrake on then it will be seized to drums. Try rocking caravan backwards & forwards, if that don't work, jack up & remove wheel & tap drum all around with hammer. If that fails then you might as well get mobile mechanic in to sort it out & service it at same time.
No no the brake wasn't on while it wS sitting. The construction crew moved the caravan out onto the street from where it was parked and they put the hand brake on. I just forgot to take it off when I tried to drive off and the car wouldn't move. I got out and took the brake off and everything was fine. The brakes seemed all right throughout the trip home. Still I am going to take your advice and have it serviced.
sorry but I have read his other posts from his previous adverts on gumtree and elsewhere, I don't trust the guy one bit, I think he was playing dumb a wise move to get it serviced, but please do that before you plan any trips anywhere,
I have a friend coming over this weekend. He is an auto mechanic and has owned caravans for years. Together we will be doing a full service. He has a damp meter. Wish me luck. I put a couple of pics of Ruby (the Swift Challenger caravan), in my profile gallery. Thanks for all the comments, I have been surprised that people would take the time. I knew caravanning was for us, sounds like a community.
At what age does a caravan become a classic or vintage? Maybe I'll have to wait for it to be valuable. Doesn't matter it is in the front yard and we are off to Brighton this weekend for our first trip in a caravan. Good bye tenting.
