My sister and brother in law are looking for a caravan. They currently have a large tent used 3 times with lots of accesories.Due to ilness and missing out on most of last season they are no longer able to use the tent and caravans we have seen so far have been rubbish. They have a max budget of 3000 and prefere 4 berth but 2 berth may be ok depending on layout. It would be nice if someone on here can let us know of some nice vans without damp and not falling to bits.

£3000 will be something older or something with lots of faults.

We have spent ages and ages looking for the right van. It cost £4000 and it must have been a good one, We still have it 15 years later.

Ask around and if you see one sitting in a garden that looks unused pop a note through the door.

I was lucky back then, I was a driver and went past many caravan sale places and past vans with for sale signs on them.

An alternative purchase is by visiting a touring caravan auction site as it's amazing how may people default on the finance payments due to unforeseen circumstances eventually leading to a repossession. A £3000 budget can pick you up a nice luxurious 4 berth caravan that meets your needs and before anyone states about the pitfalls of buying from an auction, ask yourself where second hand dealers get there touring caravans from. They don't test them either, they wait for a sale and then for the buyer to report any faults within the 3 month warranty. It's a gamble either way but the savings made can be tremendous as dealers have their limits to what they will bid on any particular unit as they only have profits in mind whereas you don't.

We bought a 1997 4 berth van 2 years ago for £3000. Yes it has a bit of damp (showing on the meter) but there are no signs of it inside the van and I have done enough to the outside seems to stop the damp getting any worse.

With a bit of TLC, I hope this van will do us for the next 10+ years.

The van we bought had stood on a storage yard probably for 6 years or more as it was more moss green than cream, but a good nosey underneath and a look at the tyres etc proved it to be in good condition although first glance at the top half did not suggest so.

What I am saying is that when you go to see a potential van, take overalls and a torch and be prepared to have a nosey under it as well as inside it.
If it has been looked after and all the appropriate mucky bits are clean and well greased, then there is a fair chance that the owners have looked after it properly.

Hi

You should get a van for around that money in decent condition if you are prepared to look.
It's finding them locally so that you can view without travelling miles and miles.
The first van we looked at was £3500 with an isabella awning... The van looked ok but something just didn't add up about the owner he didn't know much about the van and hadn't had it long so we decided to leave it and carry on the search.

We ended up increasing our budget because we wanted a newer van.
After a lot of searching we found our swift challenger about 10 miles away and had been owned by the previous owner for 7 years.
It came with 3 awnings, motor mover and every extra we could want.

Don't forget if you buy just the van then the extras could add up to around £1000 depending on what you need/ want.

Good luck with the search.
