I want to fit a folding bunk which will have to be used because my van is too old for the manufacturer to supply new. Does it matter where on the wall the fixings go, do vans have supports or can you drill and fix anywhere on wall?

It will be a folding bunk which is mostly supported by 2 metal frame legs that are vertical and will also be fixed by 2 metal arms onto the side wall.

Hi boston, this video will show you how a modern sidewall is made up.
Its basicly the same as older caravans but in older vans wood is used, so you can see if you screw into the side panel you could be screwing into lightweight foam that will not support anything, so like a stud wall you have to find the wooden supports

Our bunk supports are fixed to wooden batons/struts within the walls. We had to be very careful to make sure these went back in the exact same place when doing our damp repair.

I doubt if I buy a second hand bunk that the wall brackets will happen to be in the correct place for my van. I suppose I could use battens which would overcome this, although it will push the bed out an extra inch which might be a problem.

Thing is those batons will only be attached to a stud-like wall and you could still end up ripping down the wall?

fastening things to a caravan wall that isnt made to have things fastened to it wont be easy.. they are in essence very light weight and flimsy.. unless supports are built in in the first place i dont think its a wise idea..

The wall will need to have been designed and built with the correct strength supports in place.

Even if the studs are there they wont have been designed to support the weight of a bunk.

Bedroom annexe in the awning a better option?

When my van was manufactured it had the option of a folding bunk so I think the supports are there its just a case of understanding where they are.

Perhaps a talk with original manufacturer would help, they may well have a copy of the original stud-work plan within the wall.
