I write requesting advice on suitable fueling stops for a short holiday we are about to embark on. The trip involves traveling from the Midlands and catching a ferry from Holyhead to Galway. Rig 110 land rover and a twin axle 8m long caravan
1. Does anyone know of a suitable fueling stop on the approaches to Holyhead approaching from the Midlands?
2. Can anyone suggest a suitable fueling stop on the M4, M6 route to Galway?
As you can Imagine its a long tow and being able to pull into a fueling station connected for fueling stops will allow for the kids to continue sleeping in the back of the truck without having to disconnect the caravan.
If you download Google Earth you can enter in the 'Get Directions' box the start and end postcodes and click on search which will then give you the route. All you have to do is zoom in on street view and have a look at where all the fuel stations are on both sides of the road along that specified route and if you tick the appropriate boxes at the bottom left it highlights all the 'A' roads and motorways numbers too which also helps. This way you can decide which is the best place to stop with the caravan in tow to refuel.
Applegreen near Enfield Co.Meath is on route to Galway. Google it for more details. I don't know the run to Galway very well after that but I would say that there should be a few accessible stations before the city.
Tesco at Holyhead have a fuel station, follow directions to the retail park before boarding the ferry.
The A55 Bangor services are ok as long as you dont try and enter the main carpark to visit Burger King and the facilites there. HIgh curbs and some very tight turns in a relatively small carpark, that is always parked up with guests staying at the Travelodge, would be very difficult for a larger unit to negociate.
Like all service areas, expect to pay a higher price for your fuel, they also sell basics such as the usual newspapers, bread, milk and snacks, and there is a small lorry park to the far side of the building which is often taken up by coaches waiting to pick up tourists that they have dropped off at the local attractions.

I am Irish and travel between Ireland and the UK regularly using the ferry. Your best bet is to fill up at a supermarket near your home and I would think you would make it to the Applegreen services on the M4 after the toll. The prices can be a little more expensive at services on the motorway but in my opinion, given all the room and services you have at this motorway service station you are better off paying the extra couple of pence per litre and its not worth the diversion to find cheaper fuel. If you needed to you could stay the night at these services as there is a lot of space and in my opinion it would be safe!
Don't fill up at the Topaz in Dublin Port as I have witnessed them putting the displayed price up during the "ferry rush" and then putting it down again once the ferry traffic has cleared. If you really need to get fuel there just get the bare amount you need to get you to the Applegreen. Its still going to be less than you will pay in the UK anyway!!
On another note, Using the Dublin port tunnel would be your best option for getting out onto the motorway. It is expensive at peak times (6am and 10am at 10 euro per crossing) and the same in the evening but I'm not sure of the later time brackets. Its 3 euro at all other times but definitely worth it either way as you really don't want to be going through Dublin with your outfit at peak times. Use the tunnel exiting the port which follows onto the M1. After approx 1 mile or so you will come to the M50 South exit. Follow the M50 South and exit after 4 exits for the M4 Lucan/West/Galway/Palmerstown/Liffey Valley. It is immediately after you cross the toll bridge so make sure you are in the left lane on approach! It's a barrier free so also make sure you pay the toll at the Applegreen when you stop for diesel. Just ask to pay the M50 toll for one crossing. It costs 3 euro approx and there is no extra charge for your caravan. It's straight the whole way from there. Just make sure you merge onto the M6 for Galway after Kinnegad. Its well sign posted in any case.. Sorry for the long post but hopefully it is helpful.
