I changed the rubber washer on my hot drain plug today because on our last adventure in 2014 it started to leak hot water. When I unscrewed the plug a load of sandy grit came out, some of it still there. I always drain my hot water tank after use,is this usual and will I need to do anything?
I've never had this before but then I would never usually take it off when the tank is empty.
you could try flushing it out, it will be limescale in the tank from over the winter, don't be tempted tho to use anything like the descqaler that you would for a kettle or iron! just flush the loose bits out with clean water
Its not common this and you should check the water filter if its been fitted.
Put the plug back in and fill up the tank again. After you have done this run the pump again and take out the plug, this should wash the remainder out.
Anyone that says that you can't remove limescale from the hot water tank is not true as you can de-scale the system with just one product available on the market which is Truma Aquastar 1+2. Aquastar 3 is for sterilising afterward but there are other products on the market that will do this job anyway such as Puriclean which also removes bio-film. I de-scaled my water tank 3 years ago and amazed just how many bits of hard green limescale it flushed into the end washroom wash basin. To see more about the product watch the short video in the link.
May I just mention that some taps have s screen in the nozzle and you may well want to remove it before flushing out following treatment of the system.
