Quick heads up if you want to weigh your outfit in West Sussex.

The WSCC website lists public access Weighbridges at Lancing and Handcross operated by the Highways Agency.

It tells you how to use them by pressing the green button etc etc.

The one at Lancing works like that, but the one at Handcross does not seem to have a green button or it appears any other way of making it work.

Wasted journey that was.

Confirmed with the DVSA who operate the site.

The Handcross A23 weighbridge is no longer 'public' but they are quite happy to weigh your rig if you drop by and they are there.

Problem is they only attend occasionally and to no particular timetable so that's about as much use as a chocolate teapot?

Joined up thinking? Afraid not.

What would happen if you turned up to get weighed at the handcross weighbridge when VOSA are there and your car and van are over weight? would you have to leave some of the load on the roadside?

Good question.

I was gonna do it before SWMBO had loaded her wardrobe, so should be well under.

PS
It's DVSA now.

If you were weighed & found to be overweight, yes you would get nicked & have to get your outfit within legal limit bfore being allowed to proceed.

As for that specific weighbridge. If you approached it at some random time & found weight watchers/wheel tappers were actually there running checks & you had not been specifically directed into weighbridge then the sensible thing to do would be to keep driving.

How it works is that weighbridge is at top of incline, cops cruise up the hill looking for slow, heavily laden vehicles & pull them onto weighbridge.

Update from a nice man at the VOSA.

After the A23 at Handcross was upgraded and the weighbridge had been rebuilt the Highways Agency decided it was a health and safety issue for vehicles exiting the area if it was unmanned.

He is pretty sure the addition of a button to make the weighbridge self service and 24/7 was built into the spec and only needs the addition of the button.

He and I don't understand why any vehicle exiting the area over the givewayline onto a quiet single lane is any more risky than the old area that exited onto a fast dual carriageway.

We agreed the safety of being able to check the weight of a rig trumped the naferious risk of the redesigned exit.

He suggested writing to the head of the HA and asking for the 24/7 self weigh facility to be re-instated.
