Both plus 12v when connected to the car and cars engine running. Are you sure you mean Mk1. That would take you back into the 70s and I thought yours w as a 1998.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
Mine is 1988,I'm spending my first weekend in it on the 24th of this month so I haven't a clue how everything works yet.
It's our first starter van,so don't know anything about fridge, cooker, heater, toilet ect,but I guess we will lern, and of course with the help off people here,it's much appreciated.
Thankyou.
Terry
If you plug caravan into mains fridge should work & get cold. Feel the pipes in the freezer compartment. after an hour they should feel cold & you know it works. To run it on gas you need to light it with igniter switch at top right. there should be a tiny window at bottom left corner inside fridge to see the flame. You need to keep button pressed in for 20secs after lighting.
All this assumes fridge is in good working order. If you do want to run it on gas I suggest you clean out burner first. If it ain't been cleaned or used on gas for yrs it could catch fire when you light it.

nice one billy, does the mains in the caravan have to be switched off before I hook up my lead to the site?,it's come with an awning as well,it will be like a comedy show for everyone watching me trying to put that up lol.
Not sure how yours is wired & a caravan that age could have had all sorts of alterations but if it all working ok you plug in the mains hookup lead & it should all work.
If you don't understand any of it & caravan has not been serviced & checked then really it needs to be. Its not rocket science, anybody with a basic understanding of electric & gas can check through the caravan & make everything is working ok.
Its difficult to advise really without seeing caravan but you do need to gain a bit of knowledge & understanding on all of it. Has the caravan been serviced & have tyres been changed if they are old & so on? Do you know how to load it properly so it is safe to tow?
Hi I'm going to get it serviced ASAP,it is staying on the site we have it on anyway, they just put it on and off the pitch when we go up there, but yes I need to learn everything and of course safety comes first .

why didn't you ask to see all of this stuff working BEFORE paying for it?
Because it was in storage at the time on the site and only had a chance to look around, and done the deal over the phone with the owner which was at the other end of the country, but he assured me everything works but time will tell I guess.
If you have it on a seasonal pitch you only need the fridge to work on ehu. If it don't work your cheapest option would be to buy a small domestic compressor fridge about £70 from Argos. Cooker should work ok, not much to go wrong with those.

Thankyou billy,I know it wasn't the best thing to do to buy it over the phone but it's our first van and we are proud to own it,and yes I may find some problems with it but I will deal with them as and when, your a star billy and your advice is very helpfull
Preference for connecting is to plug the van into the mains then turn the caravan electric on at the main switch then turn on things like the fridge. Though to be honest I would imagine most vans are simply plugged in with things like the mains switch and the fridge already on. Once the mains is on there should be a green light in the fridge main switch, this at least should tell you that the fridge is being powered. You can check its function later. To light the gas part of the fridge first turn off the fridge elctrics, then turn the gas regulator to on and the gas thermostat to mid range. Then whilst pressing and holding the the thermostat swith in either click the switch for electronic starting ( if fitted it was on the later models and it should click until the gas flame has lit ) or press the piezzo ignition whilst watching the flame through the porthole in the bottom left of the inside of the fridge. If it does not light with the piezzo then wait 10 secs before trying again. Once the flame has lit hold the switch in for a further 10 secs and the flame should remain alight.
To use on twelve volts plug the car in, start the engine and press the 12v switch if it is powered you should see a little red light in the switch.

The secret is in preparation and not rushing. At home check the poles and try to make sure you know how they fit together. Some people put a variety of colours of tape on them to identify which is which. When you are ready to set up unfold the awning towards one end of the van and feed the awning tape into the rail, just make sure that you do not push it in inside out. I prefer to pull the awning through with the front and side panels out, it makes the canvas so much lighter to handle. Once the awning is fitted all the way through the rail check that it is at the same level at either end, I stand in the opening and if each end just touches my head it is right. Then start with the centre pole, and work outwards towards one end and then do the other. It is worth while pegging temporarily the canvas at the base of each pole if it even the slightest bit windy. Now fit the side and front panels and square everything off trying to get the height the front the sMe as at the rear. And all the front poles in a line with the bases of the corner poles pulled out as far as possible. Now you get to the hard bit, you have to put all the pegs in. Once all the pegs are in go round all the poles making them as tight as possible to the canvas, it should try to stretch the canvas tight. Now pull up a chair and demand that the galley slave produces a pint or a brew.
