Just read an item in the daily telegraph about a decision by the the highest court in our land to instruct our government to obey the EU law regarding diesel pollution which in effect will ban us from using diesel engines.
------------- If if it aren't totally broken its probably best left alone.
Sounds like a bit of media panic to me. There is a significant problem with the emissions of current diesel engines, specifically the particulates (tiny soot particles) that these engines produce. They're pretty terrible for human health and levels in big cities are considered to be dangerous.
However...scientists are busy developing new technologies to filter the particles out of the exhaust, so there's no reason to panic just yet. Of course, this makes for a much less explosive newspaper story.
In the long term, it might well be that petrol engines will win out, because the particulate filtering will have an efficiency impact - it just remains to be seen how big that impact is and whether it's enough to tip the balance over to petrol.
Heres a thought new heavy oil fuels (Diesal) are now free of many products that used to protect it from freezing, be warned if we get a harsh winter this year,
Ermm the article is very selective about what it presents
up to twice the nitrogen dioxide,
That only applies to the much older generation Diesel engines, modern ones, are at a level just above Petrol Engines, and with continued development, will drop below petrol engines.
A number of Diesel Engine Manufacturers, use Add Blue, in their Exhaust systems, as part of Emission control. Especially Truck engines
So Engine Manufacturers are well aware of the responsibility to develop cleaner engines.
Typical journalism twisting things, to the worst possible scenario!
Instead of believing just one source, try researching the subject, and find out the full facts, behind the story.

Oh dear. We will soon be back to the days of a man walking in front of motor vehicles waving a red flag.
Back in the days when city smog was a huge problem, most public transport in Glasgow (my home town) was accomplished by Trams and Trolley Buses, both electric and none pollutant, well at least in the town.
Now we are all smokeless, but the Trams and the Trolley Buses have been replaced with Diesel burning Buses and the traffic pollution in Glasgow is the highest in Scotland.
If only the City Fathers had had the foresight to keep the old transport system then Glasgow would now be one of the cleanest cities.
Non issue. Possible future could be turbo petrol but years into future. All current diesel vehicles on road now will have reached end of life long before anything changes.

Yrs ago when we did have cold winters diesel was far more prone to waxing than now. A drop of petrol in it did the job. Nowadays UK winter diesel has to be good down to -15c and that is not going to change.
I have also read the articles but just think of all the towns without buses the worst polluters in the world.
congestion cured over night IF BORIS JOHNSON gets his way.
Oh sorry he only said well maintained diesel cars.
How many times have you been stuck in traffic behind a bus belching out stinking fumes. Haulage firms maintain there vehicles because its there bread and butter but public transport the public pays less maintenance more profit same with old diesel pacer trains, buses on rails.
Most of them are over 40years old and still in daily use.
If we go all electric how due you make it with out a carbon foot print even nuclear has its draw backs more wind farms than houses.
no fields to grow food because of the solar panels.
We could turn off all the lights (and power stations)stop every engine in Britain and it would not change a thing While China,India carry on polluting as they do
Who are still building Coal fired power stations..And don't forget America...
when will a water powered engine be developed for cars or has there already been one? BTW Billy i don't expect to ever give up my Volvo diesel powered car i'll probably be gone before it and i expect at least another twenty years
