How easy are these to replace in an Alko stabiliser?
Is it not for the faint hearted or is it as easy as the Youtube video (which only showed them being removed) makes out?
Van is 6 years old but there's still plenty of green band on the little button thing when its hitched up so I thought there would be plenty of wear in them, the workshop who have just serviced it at horrendous cost merely noted they were badly worn.
Wtf didn't they change the damn things! still never mind I guess I'll have to do it, assuming its simples*
Has anyone actually done it? Advice gratefully received.
Our van has an AKS 1300, the friction pads are very easy to check/replace. A small circlip on the outside of the stabiliser is all that holds them in place, remove this then push the pad in. It will come out on the inside of the hitch. There are 3 washers in there too which it is worth removing and inspecting (one of mine had shattered!). Replacing is the opposite of removal, to quote every Hayes manual ever.
For most people I would say it's a DIY job (obviously this depends on your confidence with such things), you only really need a pair of pliers to remove the clip and a screwdriver to push the pad out with. My two pieces of advice would be to be careful not to lose the clip, maybe put a big sheet or piece of paper down before you start, and make sure you have enough time to source replacement pads/washers if you find you need them (ie don't do it the day before you set off, like I did ...).
As an addition i've been told the Winterhof as on Elddis vans are very simple to change also.
( That's if your dealer isn't doing them under warranty as they let me drive out after a full PDI and service , as a caravanning novice with them on or just past the limit!!!! )
