After two years away from caravan's I took the plunge again and bought a '99 Rallye with motor mover. Well the mover worked fine at the seller's house and battery went flat at home address. Charged up and works fine but think the battery is beyond its useful life.
Now before i go and spend any hard earned cash are there any batteries that are better than others ?. Ebay shows an 120ah with 4 year guarantee for £73. Do any one else recommend any quality batteries ?
We have a Numax 110ah battery. You need to take into consideration the size of the battery box as a 120ah may not fit in it.
We bought our battery from Tayna in wales and it was delivered to our house for less than £80 and comes with a 3 year warranty.
For sub £80 for a 120Ah battery are certainly not within a mile of talking about a "quality" leisure battery.
Whether you need a quality leisure battery depends on whether you plan using your van off an EHU for more than a short week end. If on EHU most of the time a starter battery will handle the mover competently, even a battery much smaller than a 120 Ah. A bigger battery only really helps movers in that a sick big battery will limp along better than a similarly sick smaller battery.
If you actually want a leisure battery, ie one for use off an EHU routinely, and you really do want to be buying quality rather than on price, I suggest looking at a Banner Energy Bull of about 100Ah rating. As already stated Tayna are an excellent source of batteries; it is in your interest to buy from a battery specific reseller than, say a caravan accessory outlet; they know how to look after their stock and have a good turnover.
Thanks for replies...... Only two weekends away a year off EHU, just that I live on a main road and after it ran flat half in half out without much help to push just wanted to make sure a battery was up to the job. Mover only has to move approx 50 yards on slight incline but nothing major.
Well this might seem a bit backward moving really, but I have a spare battery charged up and ready just in case this happens. No way could I push my tiny caravan onto my drive on my own. If I'm away for a week, the 85amp battery usually still does the job, but I have a 75amp backup as a spare. This stays at home and is charged up in case I need it to get my motormover working at home.
We have just had a new 110ah deep recycling gel battery fitted to our caravan, highly recommended for delivering power to a motormover and the same type as used to power the larger mobility scooters and carry a heavy weight over distance, ratger than an ordinary leisure battery that is just designed for powering lights, pump, radio/tv, unmotorised gadgets ect.
Our last 110ah leisure battery did work well with the mover as long as it was fully charged, but became rather sluggish with the mover in other situations, although we did manage, we didnt realise the difference until we had the new Gel battery fitted. They are a bit more expensive though at around £105, but from what we have experianced in using it upto now, they are worth it.
