Hi,

This may seem very daft question, but I'm just trying to protect ourselves.

We've viewed a caravan at a dealers which we really liked and placed a deposit on, we've part exchanged our old one and left with still a sizeable balance , I was planning on using a credit card to pay the balance and use our savings to pay it off, therefore offering us some consumer protcteion, however I've just noticed that they only take payment on credit cards for certain limited amount.

The van is all our savings so feeling a tad nervous hate parting with cash.

Any advice would be great

As long as you put more than £100 on your Credit Card you have the protection you are looking for. Consider Finance, or part card plus part savings. The choice is yours as you are the only person to know about your finances.

You can usually pay balance by debit card when you go to collect it. This avoids paying by cheque which prevents dealer having both caravan & your money at same time. As long as you pay balance by debit card & tow caravan away then he has money, you have caravan, done deal. Obviously you will ensure caravan has been Cris checked either by you or dealer before delivery. This is important as even if previous owner bought caravan in good faith if he did not update with Cris caravan could show up as have being stolen. Dealer should check all his caravans with Cris but not all do.

Get yourself a new credit card, with 0% on purchases. (Santander 1-2-3 credit card for example). Put as much as possible on the card up to your balance, keep your savings in the bank. Pay the minimum amount each month, (so long as you have a 0% card), earning interest on your savings.
Make sure you pay off the amount before the interest free period ends. You'll also get protection then from the credit card. (As The Vicar has already stated, so long as you spend more than £100 on a purchase, you'll be covered by your credit card - so long as it's just for one item, which in this case it is - you only need to pay the deposit to be covered). But, if you get a 0% card, you can earn some interest, and perhaps keep your savings for an emergency, whilst you build them back up again....
Hope this helps...
