Can anyone help please. I have an old Eriba Triton that I have not used for several years but wish to resurrect. Does anyone know if a 2007 1.6 vw polo will tow it. Now on my own I am a bit confused about the different weights given. The polo with tow 1090 kg but lots of weights appears on the Triton; the chassis says 780 kg and 860 kg and the towing bracket says 100 kg. Please help!
At a guess, but a pretty informed one, the quoted 780 kgs would be effectively the Eriba's ex-factory weight, the 890 kgs its maximum loaded weight and the 100 kgs the capability of the tow hitch, not its requirement.
Typically the tow hitch needs to be as heavy as the car can take and 7% of the van's mass is thought to be ideal; so if you car can take a noseweight of 60 kgs then that aspect is fine.
It all looks very doable.
As the van has not been used for several years this will most likely have damaged the tyres, so you will need to have them changed.
From the above 890 and 780 kgs this indicates you have a payload of just 110 kgs for all you carry; that is adequate but will need a bit of care, as even being solo you still need one of many things.
Your mass ratio relative to the car, this often referred to magic 85%, is not going to be an issue at all.
890kg will be fully laden weight, if your Polo is diesel it will pull it not probs. Petrol will do the job but not so well. If caravan has not been used for yrs then it needs service and new tyres.
Easiest will be get mobile caravan service man in and get a mobile tyre fitters like etyres to fit new tyres. Otherwise pump up tyres and you should be ok for very local tow a few miles at 30mph to service and tyre places.
